John Ward has passed away.

Old Vol fan here. Saw my first game in 1961. Used to enjoy listening to Mooney and Fox before John Ward. They were great, but John was superb. Made the games come alive in such an electrifying way. One of my best memories in his early career was a call involving Richmond Flowers (speedster for UT back in the Dickey era): “Pass complete to Flowers, who is open in space. He turns upfield. Oh my! Watch that rocket roar!”

So many great times listening to him over the years. No one else comes close.

RIP.

So sad to hear the news. I have no idea how many times I listened to him years ago. A legend. Prayers for his family.

Does anyone have video of or a link to him last year being honored on the field during a game, incredible standing ovation, as he wiped away thr tears as some of his famous calls played over the PA?

Awful. Obviously growing up in Boston I didn’t get to hear a lot of his calls, but always understood what he meant to the program. I still have the old “Give Him Six” vhs that my dad bought me way back in the early 90’s.

Same here from Illinois - I have watched footage and calls on Youtube

Thank you John for bringing the excitement of Volunteer football to us every Saturday. Saturdays, Vols football, and John Ward were so much an important part of our lives growing up. You were truly special. Bless you. RIP

RIP. He is indelibly tied to Tennessee football.

When I think of Tennessee football I think of the orange and white, the checkerboards, Smokey, and John Ward’s voice.

One of my most prized pieces of vol collectibles is an autographed personalized photo from John.
My first game at neyland was his first game 1968 Georgia

My best memories are if me and my brother going to the games and getting there early enough to sit on the grass so we could see and listen to John and Bill for the
Pregame show. Rest In Peace John. You was the best.

Legendary in every sense of the word.

Willie Gault is running all the way to the state capital...John Ward is running all the way through the pearly gates. Godspeed, Sir John.

My earliest and fondest memories of Vol football begin with John Ward. I'd listen to him instead of even watching on TV most of the time... and mute the TV for him whenever I did watch. Heaven just got a legend.
God bless the Ward family. 😔
