We would turn the tv volume down and bring the radio into the room and turn it up to listen to John while watching the game. He was the best football announcer but even better with basketball!! BOTTOM!!! YES!!

Right up there with Keith Jackson as the voice of college football. Condolences to his family. TOUCHDOWN TENNESSEE!!!

Listened to him for many years while working on home projects in my workshop on Saturdays. Did not care one bit if it was on the tube. He was just great to listen to.

One of the best parts of my childhood is gone. Feel like I lost a grandfather. Rest in peace Mr. Ward. There will never be another like him.

This sums it up pretty well. Just a very sad day! I had the privilege of meeting him at his home years ago. He was a very kind and gracious man. RIP John Ward.

RIP John Ward

John Ward was the best undoubtedly. Don't forget his sidekick for all those years was Bill Anderson.

They produced the linked video in 1997 celebrating their 30 years together.

Together they narrate it and there are lots of highlight clips in it.

It truly is, IMO, the best way any of us can relive the memories and for those who were not around in those days, this is what the fuss is all about.

Before there were 4K TV's, John Ward brought 4K radio to Tennessee fans all over the world! We could "see" the games just as clearly through his voice as we can on the latest 4K TV's available today.

RIP Mr. Ward.

RIP Mr. Ward. You made UT football special for me growing up.Thanks for painting a picture with your words. Nicest and most professional person you could ever meet.

John Ward painted word pictures for VOL listeners to the extent that not being at the game didn't matter so much. He was also a brilliant businessman & total gentleman. Thank you, Mr. Ward. :hi:

This news got me today. My Grandad refused to listen to "the idiots on TV" calling the game. Every game he'd turn off the sound and turn on the radio. Every game I couldn't go to, I had the radio on. The "Miracle at South Bend", I had the radio on. The '86 Sugar Bowl, I had the radio on. The '96 Citrus Bowl, radio. The '98 Fiesta Bowl....the radio and John Ward. He had a way of making you feel like you were invited into the press box with him. Something special that you only get with radio broadcasts. Tennessee scored one of the biggest touchdowns in its history when they put Mr. Ward in the booth. John Ward is a legend and everyone who had the opportunity to listen to his broadcasts were privileged.

Give...him..six............................TOUCHDOOOOOOOOOWN, TENNESSEE! Rest in Peace Mr. Ward.
