John Currie of K State Hired as AD

Topeka KS beat writer for KState just said Currie and Bill Snyder do not have good relationship. When Hyams asked him why? He said Currie would not let Snyder schedule cupcakes like Snyder had done most of his career. Snyder likes a light schedule. Currie upgraded their schedule and Snyder does not like it. If Currie really did that then good for him. Bill Snyder has made a career of playing nobodies in the out of conference schedule.

Agreed, though that interview with him did not leave me with excitement about this hire. When asked about his upside, literally the only thing the guy could come up with was that he was an excellent fundraiser.

Hamilton 2.0

Very disappointed that we didn't get a Tennessee guy when we had a very qualified candidate in our back yard. This really alienates the fan base. It's so discouraging being a Tennessee fan, but what can you expect? Maybe it'll work out. I just hate it for Blackburn, and honestly for Fulmer as well. I guess we'll wait and see.

He is a Tennessee guy. Student and administration both.

Just give the guy a chance. Most of you on here have already proven you have no idea of what is going on. Laughing Out Loud.

1. Not a unifying hire...."if TN brass was looking for a unifying hire, this anything but..."
2. Hamiltons right hand man
3. Was point man on unifying boosters in effort to push out Fulmer in 2008
4. Doesn't have good relationship with Bill Snyder at KState
5. Has done some good things
6. Great fundraiser
7. Blackburn wasn't at top like Currie on Hamilton staff .... Currie was Hamilton's "bad cop", rubbed some people wrong.
8. Blackburn wasn't formally interviewed, said many former players and alumni who favored Blackburn feel like they've been slapped in the face
9. Has heard from KState people who are "jumping up and down, are glad to be rid of Currie"
10. Wonders what Butch is thinking about this hire.
11. If Currie gets football deal right, all will be forgiven
12. Gotta get prominent Tennessee people involved....might even see Peyton at presser on Thursday
13. He has his work cut out for him.

WBIR just had Chris Low on during sports. Said the same thing about Currie being the biggest voice to fire Fulmer.

Went on to say this hire has split alot of people at UT and not just the fans, especially considering Blackburn never got a formal interview.

That bolded is just unreal.

Edit: got KB'ed.

Basilio may be full of crap, but he's saying he has text saying neither Barnes nor butch are happy about this hire.

Tough sh--! The only place that the tail can wag the dog that I can think of is Ala. football. If either, or any coach here for that matter doesn't like this move, then they can take a hike!!

If he was the point guy for Fulmers firing, does anyone really think Peyton was a yes vote for Currie?

9 times out of 10, if UT was looking for new AD and announced that the top candidate was the AD at UTC then VN would explode. People would be upset that he even got an interview.

No offense to Fulmer, glad it's not him. Can't hire a guy you fired 8 years ago to be boss of the position he got fired from. I wanted Blackburn too, but I won't lose sleep over it.

Chris Low should have elaborated on #5 a little more and given his comments more balance. It seems he just wanted to emphasize that Currie was Hamilton's boy and won't be universally liked... and as for #11? I mean, no f***ing s***, Chris! Did you spend a lot of time on that one?

"Currie returned to Knoxville in 2000 as Assistant Athletics Director for Development and was promoted to Associate Athletics Director for Development in 2002."

All I'll say is when he was in charge of Development, one of his minions put me in the system as "deceased" (after I made my donation) and did not send me my season ticket renewal. Boy were they scrambling when I called to ask what the heck was going on and they discovered I was not dead. Got my tickets. Needless to say, I'm not impressed. It is what it is.

I'm not being a smartass or trying to argue, just asking a question that I honestly have no clue about.

Obviously, losing the money is not good, but that aside, what makes these boosters experts on who is best for running the athletic department? Are they really that qualified? I mean, correct me if Im wrong, which I know you will, but haven't these same boosters been involved with the last two AD's?

Again, I know nothing about all of this and just asking.

I don't think they are best to deciding who runs the department. However, when one of the main roles of the AD is fundraising and you go into a job with a LARGE segment of the money population against you, it makes your job that much harder.

I just can't for the life of me figure out how Blackburn didn't even get an interview. If you want to hire somebody else in the end, then fine. But to not give the guy a formal interview????? That is horrendous! Why even have a search firm or committee? Total incompetence. This is not a good first look for the new Chancellor.

The irony here is Currie was the bullhorn to fire Fulmer.

ALl I can do is look at his wiki page, looks like a great hire to me. At this point the only place to go was outside.

This is the only thing any of us can do. I looked him up and he seems to have the credentials. His success rivals that of Blakburn and he is a Tennessee guy. I really hope he does a great job.

So he's good with the business/donor side of things, but questionable on the coaching decisions. He fired Frank Martin and hired Bruce Weber- not a good look. He didnt have to do anything terribly important with the football program, besides some necessary facility upgrades (which, by all accounts, were planned well before he arrived) - with Snyder at helm the football program practically runs itself.

Cant find any reasons to be excited about this hire, seems to be par for the course for UT. Sure he has UT connections but he was also Hamilton's right hand man. Big red flag if there ever was one.

Ill crawl back under my rock now...

He didn't fire Martin. Martin left over a few disagreements with him.

And Chris Low is?

Joe tessitore: "it's a fantastic hire.... this is not old school football, that's gone, in today's in environment you have to have a competitive young up and comer..."

Hyams also said on the radio that this guy wasn't really liked when he was at UT and thinks that the Chancellor did the hire and no boosters had a say. Saying Peyton was on the search team and no way that Peyton would of voted for this guy over Fulmer or even Blackburn. He went on to say that a lot of people were not happy with this hire. I bet the Chancellor was sent to UT from Russia or the NSA to completely destroy the program. I thought the ones that were already in place were doing a fine job at it.
I bet this Chancellor wont last 2 years.
