He didn't have THAT good of a year. He was very helpful but he's not a top dollar QB.Don't think if he gets another year of eligibility he will play for the Vols. My guess he asks the Vols for whatever top dollar is and goes into the portal if they don't give it to him. A proven QB is worth a lot of money.
Why would we lose GMac? If things had gone as planned he would've been QB2 to Merk in 26 so being QB2 to JA doesn't lose him anything, gives him more time in the system and to put on some weight. In '27 it's up to him to take the QB1 spot. No, we'll lose both G Mac and Merk.
Ideally Joey comes back and Gmac takes over in 27I think it would be a good thing.
Mac wouldn’t leave in 2026 because he’d know he would get to compete for the job in 2027 as a RSSo. Remember, Mac grew up wanting to be a Vol. And Faizon wouldn’t leave for the same reason.
Then, both return in 2027 and Faizon, with a year in the system, has a better shot and likely wins the job. Mac may transfer out in 2028 after that happens.
So you get Joey, Mac, and Faizon for 2026 and you get Mac and Faizon for 2027.
Contrast that with the situation if Joey does not come back:
Mac likely beats Faizon out in 2026 because he has a year of learning under his belt. Faizon is more likely to transfer in 2027, knowing that Mac has the job for 2-3 more years. So you’re worse off in both 2026 and 2027.
Ideally, Joey is back in 2026 and Faizon wins the job in 2027. Joey acts as a bridge.
Wrong. Hooker got much better his second season, so would Joey AguilarNo.
We will have QBs with a much higher ceiling on the roster. And if we don't, we have a problem evaluating and developing QBs.
I am happy JA came in and performed above expectations, but what we have this year is likely about as good as he is going to get.
So? Maybe will get some football players who become doctors. This needs to end, imo. I don’t fault the players, as they are making more money than they ever will, but there has to be some kind of end point. It’s a matter of time before we have unlimited eligibility as long as you maintain “student” status.
You don't know that for sure. Gmac is #3 this season. Next season he will be the actual backup. He has started to falter a little down the stretch, but I think he would be better next year, no doubt. But you play with fire bringing him back. Merk is likely gone regardless, but Mac probbaly leaves too, leaving you with JA and a true freshman. You'd have to bring another guy for depth purposes.
Think what that would do for the sport. How many guys would go to juco for development then have 4 years of big-time ball to make it to the league? This suit, if successful, would basically mean that JUCO seasons don’t count against eligibility. So it wouldn’t have the effect of unlimited eligibility and would only affect players who came from JUCO.
The prior Pavia ruling was a little weird anyway in that it only granted 1 extra year for playing JUCO, since JUCO is 2 years.
See the thing is nobody knows what GMac would do. I would say right now he is feeling confident that he will be the starter next year. And if Aguilar gets another year, GMac may view that negatively and think he can get more playing time elsewhere. Why would GMac leave? Merk for sure but if Nico had stayed the plan was for Merk next year anyway, not GMac so he would be QB2 anyway. If he can't beat out a freshman QB for the #2 spot then he probably should be looking. Don't forget Brandon was hurt most of this year so who's to say where he's going to be at come bowl and spring practice
Also where would GMac go? It's not like TN QB's leave and go to schools that are competing for the playoffs. There will also being QB's with more playing time entering the portal that' he'll have to compete against. His best bet is to stay, put on weight, learn and keep Brandon seated
