Don't think if he gets another year of eligibility he will play for the Vols. My guess he asks the Vols for whatever top dollar is and goes into the portal if they don't give it to him. A proven QB is worth a lot of money.

He didn't have THAT good of a year. He was very helpful but he's not a top dollar QB.

For example, there's little buzz about him being a high NFL draft prospect.

Why would we lose GMac? If things had gone as planned he would've been QB2 to Merk in 26 so being QB2 to JA doesn't lose him anything, gives him more time in the system and to put on some weight. In '27 it's up to him to take the QB1 spot.
The risk of going into the portal is getting picked up. Got to remember there's going to be QB's with actually D1 playing time also going in looking to get paid.
He could wind up at a lower conference, getting paid less. Smart move is to keep grinding and take QB1 in '27

You think Heupel is going to tell Joey to walk and we stick with Jmac next year?Boy if we don't make the playoffs and Joey goes to another Team and balls out.He is going take some heat,because his decisions on starting Milton over Hooker and the(Nico mess)has not been that great. He is lucky Joey fell into his lap this year ,without him im not sure how many games we win.I know alot on here wants Joey to move on and let our young 5 star QB's take over.It is a hard decision for Heupel but he is getting paid 9 million to make those.I would like to see what a 2nd year in this offense Joey could have.

We will have QBs with a much higher ceiling on the roster. And if we don't, we have a problem evaluating and developing QBs.

I am happy JA came in and performed above expectations, but what we have this year is likely about as good as he is going to get.

Contrast that with the situation if Joey does not come back:

Mac likely beats Faizon out in 2026 because he has a year of learning under his belt. Faizon is more likely to transfer in 2027, knowing that Mac has the job for 2-3 more years. So you’re worse off in both 2026 and 2027.

Ideally, Joey is back in 2026 and Faizon wins the job in 2027. Joey acts as a bridge.

Here's what I know, 3 QBs that look like they could play are not going to sit on the bench in 26.
No matter who the starter is.
If JA gets another year I would bet the farm Hype will start and roll with him.

Plot twist: the courts give Joey another year, he stays, GMac goes all Julian Sayin and beats him out in 2026. Aquilar shows out at combine and still gets drafted.

You don't know that for sure. Gmac is #3 this season. Next season he will be the actual backup.

Think what that would do for the sport. How many guys would go to juco for development then have 4 years of big-time ball to make it to the league?

Also where would GMac go? It's not like TN QB's leave and go to schools that are competing for the playoffs. There will also being QB's with more playing time entering the portal that' he'll have to compete against. His best bet is to stay, put on weight, learn and keep Brandon seated

See the thing is nobody knows what GMac would do. I would say right now he is feeling confident that he will be the starter next year. And if Aguilar gets another year, GMac may view that negatively and think he can get more playing time elsewhere.

Getting JA for another year could be a huge disaster. I would rather not risk it.

I mean, nobody actually believes these are amateur student athletes anymore - this is minor league pros now - so maybe a hard age deadline or something. Everything else is simply a facade.

Of course you do. Him coming back solidifies that there is no risk of Matthews or Staley leaving for more established QB teams in the portal.

You 100000% pay him whatever to come back.
