Springer and Johnson have to test the waters and get feedback. Really doubt James would leave. He is an enigma to me on the court as I think he has the skill set to be better than his numbers indicate. Springer has the most polished game to leave now, but Johnson has the most upside. Although I think Johnson’s stock may have dropped a little bit. If either feels they are a comfortable 1st round choice, you have to go.
NBA drafts on potential. Springer has body, and has iso skillset for next level. I think scouts would appreciate his willingness to pass, his defense and shot selection. He is not a proven volume perimeter shooter, but overall a mature game. He could be like Bradley Beal was when he was at Florida for that one year, if he had the same minutes and were more selfish in seeking his own shot. Both big strong kid wings. Johnson needs to tighten up his handle and improve perimeter shooting, but athletically he is ready and he presents with a great attitude and competitive drive. Johnson could be like a DeMar DeRozen type player who, to this day, isn’t a great perimeter shooter but still a perennial All-star. When both get pro coaching, pro conditioning, pro training they are going to be good at next level. I guess the question will be, is another year going to make a difference. Getting drafted top 10 vs top 30 is a difference. Both competed with Jalen Suggs consistently and he will likely be a top 3 pick, so obviously both can measure themselves against him. If they go pro, I wish them the best. Heck Jordan Bone has primarily played in G-league but just signed a one year contact with Orlando worth over $1M.
Who knows, in this COVID-19 environment, maybe the sample size of data won’t be enough for the scouts to take the same amount of risk like they have in the past. Pipe dream perhaps as draft boards are full of college freshman. Obviously would love to see them all back with Chandler, but doubt that happens. Pons will be gone for sure and expect he will have a nice pro career, probably in Europe, but the NBA will certainly take a look at him and he may get in at 2nd round or get a camp invite. Fulkerson is the one who is more uncertain to me. He can’t play in the NBA.
If we have to replace all 4 next year, that would be tough. Overall, I hate the one and done rule. It has ruined college basketball to a certain extent at higher levels and diminished the quality of play.
