Jimmie Kimmel Show gone !

When would have been a good time for you?
If Disney/ABC had just waited until the end of Q3 on October 1st, when the Nielsen ratings for Jimmy Kimmel Live! could be evaluated, with more time allowed for the reaction of affiliates and advertisers, then this wouldn't give such a strong appearance of government overreach, and an infringement on 1st Amendment rights.

If those ratings showed a decline from Q2 .... it would be very easy to sell this as a business decision.

Found the reason

The Nexstar-Tegna merger is pending FCC approval, requiring the FCC to relax ownership rules that currently limit a single company from reaching more than 39% of U.S. households with its over-the-air signal. Nexstar is acquiring Tegna for $6.2 billion, and the deal is subject to both FCC and Department of Justice approval, as well as shareholder approval. The proposed merger would create the nation's largest local media company, but it hinges on the FCC's potential deregulation of broadcast ownership rules.
Key Aspects of the FCC Review
Ownership Cap Exceeded: The merger would result in Nexstar controlling stations reaching nearly 80% of U.S. households, significantly exceeding the current 39% limit.
Regulatory Approval Needed: The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) must grant approval for the deal to go through.
Potential Rule Changes: The transaction relies on the FCC relaxing or changing existing TV station ownership rules to allow for such a large consolidation of local media.
Broader Regulatory Landscape: Approval also requires scrutiny from the Justice Department, and the deal is seen as testing the deregulatory approach under the Trump administration.
Current Status
Agreement in Place: Nexstar and Tegna entered into a definitive agreement for the $6.2 billion merger in August 2025.
Expected Close: The companies anticipate the deal will close by the second half of 2026, contingent on regulatory approvals.

Now do Sinclair. And then do the equal-time rule.

If Carr had just kept his mouth shut, there wouldn't be much to complain about here. I don't care anything about Kimmel or the cancellation of his show .... as long as it was completely Disney/ABC's decision, made free from government duress.
The State should have stayed out of it. The affiliates had already moved. All the government did was muddy the waters - the market was working, stay your ass on the sideline. Dumb.

Okay ..... this explains everything.

It was joint FCC/Nexstar pressure. Nexstar operates 33 ABC affiliates, and that is evidently enough leverage to get ABC to cancel a late night talk show. This situation still stinks, but not as bad for Disney/ABC as I thought it did.

1st amendment rights? He works for a company and they can fire him if they don’t like what he says or for his performance. Not sure why you feel the need for them to run it by you first.

Agreed. Still gross

The affiliates were moving, because of massive FCC de-regulation that Nexstar needs to complete a merger. Nexstar has 33 ABC affiliates. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr is a tool.

Too many people are implying that the ratings for Jimmy Kimmel Live! were low, for me to believe that nobody cares. It obviously matters or there wouldn't be so many people talking about it.

Here are the Nielsen ratings in multiple demographics for the most recently completed quarter. That was Q2 (April, May and June) of 2025.

Among all viewers, Jimmy Kimmel Live! was 2nd in his time slot among late night talk and down 3% from Q1. In the 18-49 demographic, Jimmy Kimmel Live was 1st, and up 24% from Q1.

Can you imagine Ronald Reagan taking it personally when Johnny Carson made fun of him, as he often did? Or George Bush getting angry when Dana Carvey spoofed him? Trump is a strange man, and these are strange times.
Johnny Carson was must see TV then. That's not the case anymore with multiple streaming options and younger peoples shorter attention spans. While younger people were his higher demographic, they watch network tv about as much as I watch c span.

The people watching network tv are typically older and more conservative. He's bad for business on a going model in a dying genre.

Yes ..... 1st Amendment rights!

IF ABC fired him because of a coercive threat from the federal government .... then the government has violated his 1st Amendment rights. Obviously, my argument is that ABC fired him because of Carr's threat.

Sinclair has just as many ABC affiliates, they are NOT seeking regulatory approval for a merger, and they did the same thing that Nexstar did today. Nice spin, but the bottom line is that half of the potential viewership has had enough of the **** show.

I expect more out of the office of the President than I do some late night show ass hat
What Kimmel did was petty on steroids, Trump is an idiot. How about we just expect better and not make excuses for either?

The FCC statement was BS. It’s wrong. They should not have done it. It reeks.

The Nexstar deal explains some of their rationale, likely. They were probably hearing from customers, too.

The same clown at the FCC has been threatening ABC over The View - no action from ABC there. They clearly viewed this differently.

Nah. Going to hold the leader of the free world to a higher standard than a dumbass comedian. You should too

And I'm not making excuses for anyone

Then that should have been allowed to play itself out a little longer ..... and Carr should not have made his threat. As it stands now, there is plenty of reason to see this as a coercive move by the FCC against Nexstar, and in turn, ABC.

I've given up on Trump. But Kimmel was purposefully gaslighting a dead man's consumers with information he knew to be false.

Had Trump done the same thing Id be calling him a punk on steroids too. And I could totally see him doing something like that.

The fact still remains Kimmel is a grade A punk for doing what he did.

Trump isn't the one here who purposefully lied about the circumstances surrounding a dead man to gaslight his consumers.

When Trump does I'll have the same words for him.

The leftist media wants the narrative to be that it was a coercive move by the FCC, but the reality is that half of the viewers have had enough and Disney has finally learned their long overdue FAFO lesson.

That doesn't make sense. In three days? They don't even have the data to show if they have backlash yet. You are projecting what you want

You don't have to be a "leftist" to take offense to Brendan Carr's public threat to pull ABC's broadcast license. Do you consider Tucker Carlson a "leftist?" He has spoken out against Carr's threat as well.

The reality is that there is plenty of room for the belief that the FCC used their much needed de-regulatory cooperation in a pending media group merger, to coerce Disney/ABC into cancelling a late night talk show. That is authoritarianism.

So Trump doesn't purposefully lie to gaslight?

Well good talk. Keep your head...

You left out the most important detail purposefully I see, you taking a page out of Kimmel's playbook? Won't work on me. This is about using a dead man, purposefully lying to gaslight his consumers.

You see, it isn't about gaslighting, it's gaslighting using an assassinated man to score.

As I said, if Trump did that I'd be calling him a grade A punk too.

ABC pulled Jimmy Kimmel. Not the FCC. The narrative should be that viewers have had enough and not that the head of the FCC made a comment about looking into potential consequences (but no actual initiative enforcing regulations) when broadcasters are failing to operate in the public’s interest.

I apologize. You are only bothered when someone lies and gaslights about dead or assasinated people. That's your line and I missed it
