The numbers are not bad at all for late night talk in his time slot. And from Q1 to Q2, Jimmy Kimmel Live! gained 24% in the coveted 18-49 demographic.
Late night talk will never get the kind of viewership that Carson, Leno and Letterman used to pull. It's a different time for television in the age of streaming services. We literally have thousands more viewing options.
The timing of the cancellation, relative to the public threat that FCC Chairman Brendan Carr made, to revoke ABC's broadcasting license, suggests that government overreach played a role. It's about money. Period.
These same threats have been aimed at the view….as several people have already pointed out…..and nothing will be happening to the view. This was about dollars not the government.BS.
If Disney/ABC considered him dead weight they wouldn't have kept him around for 22 years, and hire him to host the Academy Awards on a regular basis.
They caved in to a threat from the federal government.

Edit: have you ever heard the expression “what have you done for me lately “? Long running shows get cancelled all the time. This just gave them the opportunity to virtue signal while saving a dollar
The timing of the cancellation suggests otherwise. If losing affiliates were the reason, they would have let that play out longer. This looks too much like a response to Carr's threat. They bent the knee. We are an authoritarian society now.completely unproven - Sinclair and Newstar moved first.

Trump is petty......... But I think ABC might have had enough of this as well. It's interesting to see the "say no cancel culture" crowd, fully embrace cancel culture.
I guess we can toss that in the pile with "fiscal conservatism" and everything else that you guys have abandoned to be MAGA.
If Carr had just kept his mouth shut, there wouldn't be much to complain about here. I don't care anything about Kimmel or the cancellation of his show .... as long as it was completely Disney/ABC's decision, made free from government duress.100% agree. The market should have been allowed to work without the State sticking its nose in.
Why do you post stuff like this, which does nothing to actually support the point you're trying to make? That's what you are taking objection with? The Daily Beast's choice of words?
The President of the United States just successfully cancelled a late night talk show over a joke he didn't like. LOL.
These are strange times we are in.![]()
