Jim Leavitt - South Florida

I'd take Leavitt over Leach. The coaches that do great things with little tools are always more attractive, because the possibilities of what they could do with our talent are great

I'm not sure about Leavitt. He might be great but..... He did build USF but its location is prime for building a good team. The Tampa area has Clearwater Beach and Ybor City down the street. It shouldn't be a tough sell and there is plenty of talent left over in Florida even after the Gators, Seminoles and Hurricanes get their players. Also, they play in the Bucs stadium so they can draw a big crowd. I still don't know why they are called South Florida and located in Tampa but I can see why players would go there.

EXACTLY!! Amen brother!!!! And Leavitt has been the benificiary!!! Hasn't done squatt since!!!

Plus, they play cupcakes in the BIG EAST!!!

This guy "GRIFF" is an absolute idiot. He doesn't think Leach would fit in at UT because he's unconventional and the job is "regal." What an absurd comment: Yea, give us another boring moron who for 10 years (!) says nothing other than "we'll have to look at film" and "work like heck" blah, blah. Are you kidding? Leach would be a breath of fresh air. He also asserts that enthusiasm for the hoop team has dimmed based on no sellout in the first game against a div. ii school. Again, the guy is clueless: No wonder he likes Fulmer--not very sharp.

Yeah considering he just lost 49-16 at home to Rutgers, I'm sure he's very high on the UT list. He's the same coach that 2 years ago said USF was a better job and program than Alabama.

At the time it probably was. Nobody wanted the Bama job. There were constant reports about how screwed up the Ath Dept was and how the alumni were overly meddlesome. It was compared to the Oakland Raiders...has history, but is currently a trainwreck.

I can't believe only 33 posts have been dedicated to a guy that is clearly on UT's radar if not #2 on their wish list. Let's get some discussion going on the merits of Leavitt and what really kept him at South Florida (family concerns?) vs. going to Bama or Miami both of which offered him a job. What's the deal? If he's that far on the radar, there has to be some chance of him coming, right? Let's talk.

Is Leavitt really any better than Fulmer? I don't think so.

No, but the Leach haters like to say "he turned the USF program around". Hell he's the only coach they've ever had. He's 85-51 overall. Never won his conference, and is 1-2 in bowl appearances. The Leach detractors like to use "it took him 9 years to get to this point". Well Leavitt's been coaching since '95 and hasn't won a championship and hasn't finished better than a tie for third in the Big lEast.

Sing it, bro! The Leaches are being outnumbered but he will remain my guy until they announce Kiffin or Leavitt or some other terrible choice.

Listen, I'm not lobbying for or against the guy, but let's at least give him credit for what he's done at USF. Correct, he did not 'turn the program around'; more impressively, he built the program from the ground up. USF spent a few years in 1-AA, then a couple at C-USA, then to a (albeit weak) BCS conference. In eleven seasons ,USF has had only 2 losing records and has been to 3 bowl games. To accomplish this when there was not a football program at all 12 years ago is impressive. It would be hard to imagine a better start to a program!

Like I said, I don't know that he is the right guy for Tennessee, and honestly I think he has a better chance of success where he is.

Good post.

The guy has built a program. That is something that is very hard to do.

What does losing to Rutgers have to do with the quality of coach he is? All coaches take losses. Logic fail.

BTW- I hear people bashing Fulmer for his "I have to see the film" comments. Guys...I hate to tell you, but that is the most honest, responsible answer a coach can tell you.

No coach alive can see every thing on the sideline all the time. Film is the most accurate, valuable thing a coaching staff can have. I would much rather a coach give an honest answer after watching the film, than speak off the cuff about what may or may not have happened.

I know, I know....detractors of CPF will argue that his answer is a cop out. Be objective. If you have any sense at all, that is the only possible honest answer.

Let's argue...but let's argue objectively.

Leavitt obviously has a lot of pride in what he has been able to accomplish and rightfully so. But he is never going to reach his goals at USF. This is a guy that Miami and Alabama thought so much of as to offer him a contract. And he is obviously pretty high up on MH's list from what we've been hearing.

Oh I agree 100% with you. I think he's right for USF, but I just don't think he's right for UT.

Much better choice than Leach.

Completely agreed. I don't want Leach.. (Great VU just scored on a TD return:banghead2:) ...anyway...IMO, Leach is on his way to being a rather *ahem* hefty HC. I don't want another 2 ton coach.

This day and age, HC's need to be physically fit...at least somewhat (Cutcliffe, for example, would pass). Recruits need to see that sort of self discipline imposed on the Coach himself. Guys like Ralph Friedgen, Eric Mangini, and even Fulmer to an extent, frustrate the "heck" out of me.

Kiffen, Davis, Chris Peterson, Muschamp (even though he's been d/q'd)....I think these guys have the "look" a Head Coach should have.
