JG vs Harrison Bailey

Some schools can get to the College Football Playoff with a game manager at quarterback: Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Florida State. They can recruit at such a level that allows them to dominate the trenches and control the game. Other schools can't do that: Oklahoma State, Mississippi State, TCU, Michigan State, Tennessee, etc. These schools need a playmaker at quarterback to compete at the highest level.

I think it's safe to say JG is a game manager, which I think will serve him well as an NFL prospect, but Tennessee needs a playmaker at the position. That brings me to Harrison Bailey. Before yesterday, I had JG penciled in as the starter for the next two years but after watching Bailey last nigh, I'm not so sure. This kid is legit. He's got elite arm talent, excellent pocket presence, and is very accurate even when throwing on the run. No doubt he's good enough to make Tennessee nationally relevant again, but is he good enough to unseat JG as the starter next year? I'm thinking it's going to be a battle...

I think it's little early to say he is only a game manager. People forget how unimpressive Josh Dobbs was after his 2nd year of play. JG still has a good chance to take a big jump from his sophomore to his junior season this year in leadership and production. I'm not certain he will but, I can think of a handful of QB's who made a big jump going into their Junior or Senior years. Will Grier, Kyle Shurmur, Matthew Stafford, Dak Prescott, etc. Prescott and Stafford made considerable jumps between year 2 and 3. Did anyone think those guys were NFL starting QB's after their 2nd year starting? I doubt it. Now I'm not saying JG is an NFL guy, I'm just saying we need to hold our horses a little bit before writing the kid off as a game manager. He may just surprise us this year.

He won’t unseat JG next year but HB will be better the 2nd half of his first season (as starter) than JG at any point during his last season.

For comparison, looked up Senior high school stats for: Trevor Lawrence, Jarrett Guarantano, Brian Maurer, JT Shrout, and Harrison Bailey as a Junior.

Playing in Georgia: TL in 12 games, 3290 passing yds., 41 tds., 1 int.

Playing in New Jersey: JG in 10 games, 1481 passing yds., 11 tds., 3 int.

Playing in FL: BM in 10 games, 3572 passing yds., 34 tds., 12 int.

Playing in CA: JTS in 12 games, 3064 passing yds., 27 tds., 25 int.

Playing in GA (as a Junior): HB in 9 games, 2809 passing yds., 29 tds., 6 int.

One has never passed for many yards or scored many touchdowns, and that was against New Jersey competition.

I truly hope JG has a great season something around or over 3K yards 28+ TD's 6 int. 150 yards rushing. It seems like it's a foregone conclusion on here he's going to be great and leave for the NFL.
I read on SDS , rating QB's on UGA's schedule of the 12 teams UGA plays , JG was 7th per their opinion. That's the east, OOC teams and west teams Auburn & T A&M.

And, JG is not a "game manager QB." He just hasn't had the guys around him to really showcase his talent.

Rick Clausen? Now THAT'S a game manager.

Well he sure as hell wasnt a playmaking qb who could put a team on his back. Tennessee won with an excellent running game and defense when Tee was our QB.
Lol, I swear I never know what you're gonna say next.

This is what I’m talking about.

I understand that JG will be returning with 3 years of experience as a starter, obviously, but if we’ve got a guy better equipped to help this team win whether it be Bailey or Maurer or whoever that’s the guy who should be on the field. I think it’s Bailey. Others don’t. Fine. But we aren’t good enough to win tough games without a quarterback who make plays.

I think you’re misunderstanding my opinion of JG. I’m not criticizing his ability. I just don’t think his style of play will win many games for modern day Tennessee. Put him on the 98 team and we may still win it all. He’d probably win 10+ games for UGA this year if he were their starter. Teams like that need a guy who can make all the throws, knows where to go with the football, and who doesn’t make many mistakes. That’s JG.

I do think he’s good enough to make an NFL roster... I just don’t think he’s a guy who is going to make plays when things break down or when drives begin to stall and those are frequent occurrences when you face the caliber of opponents we face without an elite supporting cast.

Attempts? Completion percentage? At least provide context. Lmao

I'm sure I'm in the minority on this here, but no. We can't recruit like those other schools. The days of consistently pulling top 5 classes are over. How many top 5 classes have we had in the past 15 years? If you all want to live in the 90s and early 2000s that's fine, but I try to set my expectations on recent trends.
We've had 2 top 5 classes...in the past 15 years...

I'm going to go ahead and speak heresy. Both Shrout and Maurer appear to be much more mobile than HB. Both have live arms. Both are as tall and are heavier. Both came out of HS programs where the talent surrounding them very likely suppressed their numbers.

I'm not writing HB as the starter following JG. I think either Shrout or Maurer or both will have something to say about that.
I think both Shrout and Maurer transfer out next year. The writing is on the wall and everyone sees it except for a few here that continue to think the backup QB is the best player on the team.

I think that we should just be pleased that we will have a senior starting QB mentor our 5-star QB while he redshirts. That sounds like a great situation!

If JG comes back next year he will be the starter. If he doesn’t, that means he had a very good year, which will be good for the team.

I'm not really sure what JG is as a quarterback to this point. All I've seen him do the past two years is run for his life or get demolished play after play after play. I think if the oline performs well JG could do some really solid things on the field. If they don't well... We will probably see more of the same unfortunately.

Rick is the classic definition.

JG should get a chance to prove what he is or isn't this year.

TL: Completed 176 in 255 attempts for .690%, and 41 Touchdowns

JG: Completed 121 in 176 attempts for .688%, and 11 Touchdowns

BM: Completed 280 in 428 attempts for .654%, and 34 Touchdowns

JTS: Completed 211 in 414 attempts for .510%, and 27 Touchdowns

HB: Completed 212 in 335 attempts for .633%, and 29 Touchdowns

It’s all about Touchdowns.
