Jerod Mayo at DE

i don't know when VNer's post sattire or irony, but if you are serious, that will not work.....i am not concerned who you could replace mayo with, but why would you take our xman and ayers who have been playing BETTER than mayo. mayo was out of the picture last week. mayo needs to stay back there and be the leader he has yet to be. we don't have a burnett, wilson, or....(don't say hefney) after watching our last two games, no one is pulling people to gether or smacking them on the helmet getting them jacked up.

If they are going to do that, why not use a 3-4 and have Mayo line-up as an OLB/DE? You could line Ben Martin at the other OLB/DE spot. Seems perfect. QB doesn't know which OLB is rushing the QB or dropping into pass coverage or both.

Ding Ding Ding.......This is what I have been preaching.

We have no NT, that is why it won't work. You wanna good look at how the 3-4 looks without the proper personnel? Watch ND. They are trying the 3-4 because they have similar personnel(size-wise) as us. It doesn't work too well when you are using a NT that weighs 290 or less.

You need a space-eating DT. UT doesn't have that. I wouldn't be suprised to see some 3-4 fronts, but it will not be the main defense.

Actually, a 3-4 can be used to cover up a weak DL. You can say that a 3-4 works best with big strong DL, but hell, a 4-3 would work just as good with big strong DL. To cover up a liability, a 3-4 could be perfect. Having Ryan Karl in the middle LB spot wouldnt be as much of a liability their either.

It might just be that "stopping the option" is what we're after. Putting Mayo on the end certainly increases the speed at the position, allowing him to get off his block and chase down a pitch man or QB if needed.

Just what I was thinking not really for sacks but to run down a back, if our D backfield can lock down the pass could be a long hard day for Tebo.

Our ends should do nothing more than drill Tebow on every play. Forget being optioned, just hit the QB and let others handle the pitch. That type of consistency in decision making helps dramatically against the option.

This wouldn't be a conventional 3-4.

UT would basically be using 5 DL, with 2 DE who would also be moonlighting as LBs. Put Bolden, Williams, and Mapu as 3 DL. They are the largest defensive lineman on the team. Mayo and Martin as DE/OLB. The DE/OLB Sometimes dropping back in coverage but primarily supporting the DL against the run and blitzing/rushing the passer.

It may not work, but what UT is currently doing doesn't seem to work well either. At least not against top competion in the opener. It's basicly going to take 5-6 men for UT to get a pass rush anyway. Why not disguise in a 3-4 and get the fastest DL on th field (Martin).

I dont know if I want Martin dropping into coverage against UF athletes in his first ever college game at the Swamp. I want him pinning his ears back and going after the QB. And that is it.

Its not necessarily the size of the NT that is the key, but it is the skill. We don't have a DT that commands a double team, skill wise. Sure, most NT's are huge, but size doesnt guarantee a double.

I just hope TN brings pressure. We are sitting ducks if we sit back and just let Tebow make veer reads on our tackles/ends all night long. We've got to MAKE them get away from that stupid veer read. It's so easy to stop if you just have disciplined players on defense.

one of the reasons why jerod had a low tackle # with southern miss game is that he was blitzing so much. he was overpursuing alot as well. i watched the cal game again today and they left him back more in a contain mode.

No I dont think they will.

It's too late to teach Mayo/Martin the position and the coaching staff doesn't have the courage to tell Mitchell, Reynolds, and Ayers they aren't getting it done and they are now playing on 2nd team DL behind Bolden, Williams, and Mapu.

You are right. Mayo is to valuable at MLB. Martin is a freshman. Chavis better stick with what they have been working with all year. They were showing improvement and they just don't need to go crazy. I mean Meyer has talked about his spread offense since he has been at UF but he has never used it against Tenn. Look at '05 and '06 not much spread attack there. Last year it was a lot of straight ahead running. And Tenn's defense needs to cover that darn crossing route that they get burned on every year by UF!:banghead2:
