So because he doesn’t view police in a positive manner it is okay for him to speak this way? Add to that perhaps he didn’t view his teachers in a positive manner either so we can excuse this type of behavior there too. So he only has to be respectful if he respects you? Come on—this is what is wrong! What happened to respecting your elders and authority? Doesn’t mean you have to agree with them. These kids get coddled in school—it is their culture, their home life, you must have provoked them etc. Never about personal responsibility anymore. And then when they act this way we continue to excuse them. Just an immature 19 year old...Totally agree........I knew at 19 not to threaten cops, but I've been taught to keep my mouth shut and I'm a black guy from a rural area.....not sure I've shared the same cop experiences from a kid from Memphis.....could there be a chance he doesn't view the police with the same optimism that I do?
Came home to my better half asking me if I watched the video. I had not, and said so. Her eyes flashed (never a good thing in my experience), and she asked me to watch it, so I did. It was bad. Worse than I thought. She knew what I had said about dismissing / suspending / executing JB over this, so she cornered me on my opinion. Honestly, this woman should have been an attorney. She's that good at making her point. I can't remember the last argument or debate with her that I won. In 19 years.
Now, mind you, she has been at my side for a long time now. She has seen me at my best, my worst, and everything in between. Covered with mud after a foot chase that went into the marsh; covered with pepper spray after a pigpile; coming home in tears over a child, animal, or innocent person that got hurt or killed; when I was on the SRT, getting called out at all hours to go sit on a perimeter or make a hot entry into a dwelling to make an arrest; and you name it. God Bless her, she has stood by my side through thick and thin. Never complained. And amazingly enough, when I went back part-time, she simply said "I know why you are doing this, I hate it, but I love you and I'm with you." Good woman. Far better than I deserve.
That video is bad. Ugly bad. I'm going to stick with my original position on this, but I will add a caveat: Jeremy Banks may or may not have NFL talent. But if he does not change his attitude, and his heart, he will never reach his potential. He has God-given talent. He needs to honor God in how he uses it.
Or he will end up being a number in a statistic of where black males who grow up in crime-infested areas end up. No one wins in that scenario.
So Go Vols, and let's hope Jeremy Banks gets it figured out before it's too late.
Started the season at running back...limited snaps at linebacker. I brought up the competition first and Barnett never garnered a sack against that level and last season we didn’t pile up interceptions against that level. Makes plays.Again, 7 tackles in 4 games. No matter the competition. And remember who the competition was.
Or just be a decent person and not say stuff that people may take as threatening...It doesn’t matter what I think.
The law says it’s not a threat, and the law says it’s protected speech.
Free speech is very important and it highly protected by the constitution and by other laws.
If one takes “angry or bad speech” and expands on it, directly threatening someone that could cross the line.
I can look at a police officer or anyone and say “I hope you die”, I can say “someone might kill you” but I cannot say “I am going to kill you” I cannot say “I’ll make sure someone kills you”
You really need to learn and understand the “fighting words doctrine” it can help keep you out of trouble and teach what a direct threat is.
Wouldn't it be cool if we said "Wait a minute. We have standards. This is the University of Tennessee and we have standards and we have boundaries. You are off the team. You will be welcomed back when you choose to behave like the man we thought we recruited"
instead of...
"Oh, he's 19 and will play good against us if we behave responsibly in this matter and make him mad."
General Neyland would be so proud.
Or just be a decent person and not say stuff that people may take as threatening...
He lied about the cookout when asked about it and the ncaa had a picture. He did not get fired for the cookout. Had he told the truth it would have been a minor violation and he would still be coaching here. He lied, that is why he was fired.Yes he did. He had a cookout with potential recruits....a violation of NCAA rules.
Yes he did. He had a cookout with potential recruits....a violation of NCAA rules.
How about just following the laws.....You have to be 21 to drink and you have to have a driver's license to drive. If he had followed the laws, no matter where he is from, this would never have happened. He was drunk...That is the problem. He said stupid things when he was drunk. Just words... Learn how to not be drunk. Problem solved.
