I like Jennings but Moss is not remotely a comparison. Moss was one of the fastest WRs in the history of the league; and despite falling, he was still drafted in the first round.Randy Moss felt disrespected in the draft process and thought he fell too far before being drafted and always carried that chip on his shoulder. Whatever the reason, he was a baller. Hopefully JJ will be too! #Stealofthedraft
He’s got a decent chance for the Niners. We carried seven WRs on our opening roster last year. This year there’s likely five that for sure are safe, health permitting (Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Kendrick Bourne, Jalen Hurd, Trent Taylor). And four serious contenders for those last two spots (JJ, Richie James Jr, Dante Pettis, Travis Benjamin). Richie James has been a decent seventh receiver for us but a lot of his value came from being our return man and he was good but not great there, so Aiyuk might take over for him, diminishing his value. Benjamin is washed at this point, and Pettis despite being a second round pick two years ago and having a somewhat decent rookie year, regressed hard last year and is perpetually in Coach Shanahan’s dog house. So I can see a scenario where JJ makes the team as the back up slot behind Taylor, meaning Travis and Richie don’t make the team, or the backup outside receiver behind Deebo, Aiyuk, Kendrick, and Hurd, meaning Travis and Dante don’t make the teamNot many 7th round draft picks make NFL rosters long term. There is a reason Jennings was drafted in the 7th round.
Also JJ brings some size we’re lacking. Size doesn’t seem to matter much to Shanahan but it can’t hurt JJ’s case. He’s got at least two inches on all of those guys other than Jalen Hurd. And he can be a great gunner on special teams which isn’t true of any of our other receivers. He’s got a decent chance for the Niners. We carried seven WRs on our opening roster last year. Funny you say that, had he not gone to us I would’ve wanted him to go to the packers. I say that because I always want at least one Vol to win the super bowl every year, and I believe the packers are the last NFC playoff team not to have at least one Vol on the roster after the hawks drafted DT (Though the cowboys or bucs in the NFC also don’t have Vols and could make big improvements this year)Glad you are. Was hoping the Packers took him. I feel several people here all wanted him on their NFL team. And if that doesn't show how people feel about him as a player? Nothing does.
I have seen that but only on this board. Hurd looked really good last preseason at WR, but a back injury put him on IR. But the 49ers have been trying to acquire a better #2 TE behind Kittle all offseason so it’s not impossible. We drafted a guy but he’s mainly a blocker and a replacement for our #3 TE who went elsewhere. Our number two TE last year was a guy named Ross Dwelley who isn’t terrible but certainly not the weapon they want. A lot of times when we went with 12 personnel last year our second TE was our fullback (or “offensive weapon” as they like to call him) Kyle JuszczykHeard some thoughts the Niners might move Hurd to TE. Which some here were saying about him as a freshman.
