Jeff Pearlman: Vols' Dooley latest to forget...| Sports Illustrated

I'm sorry, but what WAS the case then?
I was under the impression that Dooley's "invitations" to the mock game were being handed out as rewards - is that not the case?

And if it is the case, how is awarding selective members of the media any different than excluding selective members of the media?

I may be an outsider, but if my coach was pulling this nonsense I would be very displeased.

I understand the desire on the part of some coaches to lock practice down and make it distraction free - and that's certainly their right. But you can't be giving press access based on whether or not something that was published pissed you off - that's really ridiculous.

If you're worried about that stuff practice should be closed, period.

And any "journalist" who takes Dooley up on his offer knowing that others in the profession are being excluded based on *the program's* perception of their reporting has absolutely no spine.

Reading the article should be evidence enough of how many douches are there to write dirty, negative stories. Dooley did the smart thing to cut out the negativity, reporters can suck it.

He'll respond right back if you email him. I tried to be nice:

Thanks for the e-mail. We'll agree to disagree—but I appreciate you taking the time to express yourself.

Best of luck for a great season.

I respectfully remind you that the University of Tennessee hired Derek Dooley to coach a football team. Preferably, he'll oversee a return to the prominence we enjoyed in the 90's, while also undoing the assault on our traditions that mr. kiffin conducted during his coffee break in Knoxville last year. He was not hired by media outlets to jump through whatever hoops you think he should.

You are offended that you are unable to gain the information you feel you need to write a story of substance about the University of Tennessee's football program. I suppose I understand that. Soon enough, we'll all learn together what our Coach will and will not be able to do on the field. Personally, I have developed some confidence and look forward to some wins this year that many do not.

It is unclear exactly what you are looking for, but from all appearances I'm glad you haven't found it. As for me, I've had enough media whore coaches to last me for quite some time.

Wow. Really impressed by your email. The response was completely canned and lazy. How unfortunate.

Dooley has limited access all year but earlier said that he would allow some more access. One of the regular reporters asked about it. He and the SI came up with a means of limiting that group to those who deserved more access.
I was under the impression that Dooley's "invitations" to the mock game were being handed out as rewards - is that not the case?
Yes. On three critieria- faithfully showing up for briefings, effort, and respectfulness.

Even a cursory investigation would have forced this moron to conclude that "kissing butt" or asking soft questions was not what got rewarded. In fact, you could say that those who got access asked the most difficult questions.

And if it is the case, how is awarding selective members of the media any different than excluding selective members of the media?
Some earned it. Some didn't. It isn't a categorical statement on the quality of those who didn't make it. It WAS a reward to those who did.

My favorite reporter (Wes Rucker) didn't make it. No one writes better, more probing but at the same time respectful articles. But his duties are split so he wasn't there all the time.

I may be an outsider, but if my coach was pulling this nonsense I would be very displeased.
Either you are ignorant of the situation or else... stating a "less than intelligent" pov.

But you can't be giving press access based on whether or not something that was published pissed you off - that's really ridiculous.
And since that IS NOT what he did.... you should get your facts straight before drawing conclusions.

And any "journalist" who takes Dooley up on his offer knowing that others in the profession are being excluded based on *the program's* perception of their reporting has absolutely no spine.

Yes they do. It was their spine that had them every day asking often difficult questions about everything from player eligibility to bar fights. It was spine that prevented them from dropping to the level of a moronic, uninformed, half cocked bottom feeder like Pearlman did.

Pearlman is just playing up the whining from the Knoxville media.

The journalists who showed up everyday at practice (thereby showing interest in the program) were allowed access. He did this because journalists are not honest and like to write hit pieces on UT football - according to ESPN we are trailer park trash.

If he allowed ESPN or SI into practice, scrimmages, etc - they would write a bunch of dishonest crap. Period.

"[Dooley] was Tennessee's 134th choice to replace the departed (and detested) Lane Kiffin (If you're wondering, No. 133 was David Steele, former bass player for the Fine Young Cannibals, No. 132 was Emmanuel Lewis and No. 131 was me)"

Really? Why would we want this guy to get more access?

Come the f*** on man. You don't get it.

It's borderline retarded to pretend that there are spines in the sports journalism business.

What would you expect the douchebag was a fashion editor? Which translates to not intelligent enough to handle the real news.

Did not expect him to. I'm impressed he actually responded with a little wit. Guess he is use to folks like me taking
jabs at him.

He's a jacka$$ that makes a living screwing with and offending people like us. Good for him. Good for us. Like it or not this is the kind of thing that builds that us versus them mentality that makes the Vol faithful the family we are.
