These seem like excellent points to me. My only problem with the search is that, if we are to believe him, Danny White offered only one coach... Josh Heupel. That's fine if you think that Heupel really is, in White's estimation, the best coach in the nation. I know that that is disingenuous couching by White, and that we really did engage in gauging interest of many coaches, etc. But part of being a persuader and seller, as an AD must be, is to relentlessly target his top choice. That requires an actual offer, not just discussion of interest. Write up an MOU and send it and let the candidate know you are open to negotiation. Psychologically, receiving an official offer is different than discussing interest. Probably wouldn't reel in the big fish, but the downside is minimal. Embarrassing to be turned down? Please...our dignity went out the door every time Pruitt spoke and with the reports of violations. It's not like you have to pay an application fee to try to get into Harvard on a longshot. It doesn't cost UT to make offers. You don't have to believe anything that has been said to understand that it is true. The facts alone support it.
First of all, look at the number of "proven winner" coaches in recent years that have been pulled from one winning P5 program to another. Alabama got lucky because Saban didn't like coaching in the NFL. Jimbo Fisher had extenuating circumstances that made leaving FSU easier. It rarely happens because it is very difficult to do.
It's not just about money. If you are a late middle aged person, which most of these coaches are, and have made a seven-figure salary for several years already, which most of these coaches have, the money doesn't mean what you or I think it means. It's not going to change a whole lot for them. They already have enough to live where they want live, do what they want to do and give what they want to give. They aren't going to walk away from everything they've built for money they don't need.
Just look at all of the coaches that have been hired by P5 schools in recent years. including SEC schools. The hires typically look a whole lot more like Josh Heupel than Jimbo Fisher. Why? Because that's what the market has to offer.
So, even without the pending sanctions, a "home run" was a long shot at best and not because we are Tennessee but because they always are for any school. The sanctions just make it more difficult.
Why would we respond to some of these post that are CLEARLY meant to irritate and garner a response? That's something I've never quite understood. Plus, some of those post are simply hard for me to read grammar-wise.![]()
Jimbo Fisher says hello

Let's hope Heupel is the answer. He should at least make the offense a lot better I would think.

LOL---You probably looked at some of my other post.I wasn’t advocating offering obscene amounts to “any ole coach”, but rather to those you have determined to be the best in their profession. Even offering that kind of money, you might be correct that it would not be an inducement to come here. But why not try? Because it would be embarrassing to be turned down? That’s silly. Even sillier is the idea that spending top dollar for who you have identified as the best possible coach is unaffordable. Quite the opposite is the case. UT revenue goes through the roof with success. Hiring Jeremy Pruitt type candidates robs income stream for the school and ends up costing you seven million per year anyway, which is what Pruitts salary plus his 10-12 million buyout end up costing for three years of poor coaching (if we had paid his severance). Not to mention buyouts of remaining staff contracts, where applicable. Scrimping on a coach salary on the front end is penny wise, pound poor.
LOL---You probably looked at some of my other post.
1. You seem to think you know that we didn't offer these other high profile coaches. Did we and what did we offer? Another question?
2, IOW how do you know we didn't offer and they turned us down? You don't know.
3. You quote money like you are playing with monopoly money.
4. Do you know what restrictions were in place regarding Salary, Character, Dan White, BOs or Boosters? Chances are NO you don't.
Speculation is no one knows the deals or parameters posting on this Board...The Scrimping of a Coach maybe the same ole story but we put ourselves in this Position.
Edit: Don't believe everything you hear, but don't speculate on everything you think you know or want to believe....Especially when it comes to the UT Athletic Department and Administration...They definitely got egg on their face for the last 15 years, and the only thing that has changed is the Major Players in the Cast....
