Jeff Goodman tweets UT has Pitinio Jr. on the short list

Maybe $2.5m

Howland may come for 1.75-2 million with some good incentives. He is wanting back in the game and appears to be passed over by other schools because of the ordeal at UCLA. There is no doubt the man can coach. He is a winner.

Ben Howland would be $2.3 million plus good incentives. Dude isn't going to jump back in for nothing.

Hiring Tubby in basketball is like hiring Tubby in football.

Impressive resume, tons of Ws, but over the hill. Can you really expect a guy who has been in the business that long to have the energy or drive to compete?

You may be correct. He has been mentioned for the Marquette, Cal, BC, and Wake jobs. Those passes could be due to the salary he is requesting, I don't know. IMO, with him not being hired by these other schools , his value has fallen somewhat. There is a reason Howland is being passed over.
He is a very good coach and I would love to see him walking the sidelines at TBA.

Can you see Marshall or Shaka being passed over by any school looking for a HC ?

Marshall wants more than $3 million a year and Tennessee isn't paying anyone more than they'll pay Butch. Shaka may simply not want to leave, although it might be in his best business interest to do so to some sort of big school before people start to look at him as a one-dance wonder, a la Larranaga.

Idiocy in Minnesota? He's their most successful coach ever basically. Minnesota hadn't won a game in the NCAAs since 1990* (massive cheating scandal in the mid-90s wiped their NCAA record out) before Smith.

He's the only coach to ever win 20+ games back to back there.

He took them from bottom dweller, 3 wins in the Big 10, 8 wins total to winning 20 his first year. He capped that off by signing 3 4* top 100 players, one of whom was a top 50 player. That made for the #27 rated class, the next year he signed the #16 rated class in the country there.

I honestly haven't a clue why they fired him. I guess they got starry-eyed over Pitino junior and dumped the coach that had taken them to 1/2 of their NCAA appearances their 120 year history.

You ask why he got fired, I say look at the fact that it took him all of a week to find a new job.

He's one of a very small group of coaches that have taken 4 schools to the tourney. A smaller group has taken 4 and advanced with all 4.

I'm a MN fan, you guys DO NOT want Tubby Smith. Unless you're fine with being average I guess. Watching his offense was painful. Yes, he did win 20+ games a few years. But if we had Pitino last year, I think a sweet 16 run or further was a very good possibility. Instead, we finished below .500 in the Big Ten. Speaking of which, he never finished above .500 in conference and never finished in the top half of the conference. He is a great guy, not a great coach. I don't think he'll ever get you guys past perennial bubble team status. It may seem crazy that he was fired, but almost no one that actually followed the Gophers disagreed with that move.

Tubby is a great coach to get a team from bad to average, but nothing more.

Which tells top candidates that Tennessee is not serious about basketball and young K Mart blue light special coaches that they will use Tennessee as a stepping stone to land with a program that does take basketball serious and values it with football.

Yes, because Tubby and Billy G are the exact same coach.

If you "SMH" at a coach with over 500 wins, 18 20 win seasons in 22 years, 17 NCAA appearances, 9 sweet 16's, 4 elite 8's and a national title as well as multiple SEC titles, what the heck would impress you?

Thinking the exact same thing. Comparing Smith to Gillespie is like comparing Fulmer to Dooley. Some people need to stay on the football board.

While I doubt Hart would pay 3 million a year for a coach today, I do think if a coach were to come in and win at a high level, Hart would pay what was needed to keep them. A coach takes the job at 1.1 million today and takes the team to 3-4 straight NCAA tourneys and IMO that coach could be looking at 2.5-3 million in no time. Yes, at Tennessee.

Winning packs the house. Packed house means more $$, more $$ means coaches see the benefit.

Until Tennessee basketball gets on the same historical footing with football (which would take a lot of consistent winning), there's no reason for Tennessee to put it on the same level. Also, which one makes Tennessee more money? Football. I might personally like basketball more, but these are simple truths.

My point is proven. Tennessee is not serious about committing to build a championship caliber program. Continue to hire cheap Kmart blue light special coaches and hoes one hits the jackpot every so often is not being serious about building a top caliber basketball program.

Does anyone here believe that Duke, UCLA, Indiana, Kentucky, Kansas and other basketball blue bloods would settle for a Kmart blue light special?

This what I see.

I'd rather take an up and comer than Smith.
