Jeff Goodman tweets UT has Pitinio Jr. on the short list

Could he? Sure, there's a whole line of people who could. In a hire like this you prefer the least amount of risk possible, there's a lot of risk in Pitino. Like others have pointed out, his resume is similar to Martin's when we hired Martin. People were pissed about that hire and don't like what he did, do you not want someone with a better resume?

I'm not bashing him, as I think he could definitely win, but hell....what says Pitino is a better hire than White? And Whites a young coach who would cost you half the salary and half the buyout, if that.

The question I keep asking myself is, if his last name wasn't Pitino would we be talking about him? I think the answer is no.

I could differentiate his résumé from Martin's, but everyone will have a different opinion on the new hire. I will not be excited about Tyndall or White. However, I do understand that either could succeed at UT. I don't know their personality or strength. I wasn't thrilled when Butch Jones was initially hired. I just think Pitino could be decent right away. Tyndall and White will need time, and the fans will have to be patient.

White has won just as much as Pitino, if not more? Why would he need time but Pitino wouldn't?

I just don't understand pitino. Tyndall, miller and White all have just as good if not better resumes, and would cost half what Pitino would.

K-Mart blue light specials that tell us UT is not serious about building a championship program.

I just can't imagine that anyone close to Pitino Jr. would think Tennessee would be a good job for him.

I always thought football was the number one priority at Tennessee. I don't think the money is going to be there like a lot of people think it's going to be.

Then don't have high expectations. It will take $2 million plus to get a proven winner to UT. Otherwise, we are just going to be mediocre for the next 3-5 years.

White needs to wait on the Ole Miss job. 3 years as a head coach and zero NCAA's. This is about competing for championships not having some cheerleader on the sidelines. You want a guy that plays fast pace and plays in the NIT or do you want a guy that goes 29-7 and has been to the Final 4 three straight times like a Howland?

Ding ding ding! The best resume out there is Howland. And he would not cost more than any of the others mentioned in this thread. Who doubts Howland's ability to win big? Seriously? And he would so come here if offered right now.

Pitino has coached in the toughest conference as a head coach and been an assistant under Donovan. White has coached in the Sun Belt and C-USA and been an assistant under Andy Kennedy. Again, we will all have our favorites. The new coach will just need time, and I feel Pitino could do more sooner than the others. JMO.

Wow, you guys are gung ho over a coach that finished 8-10 in the Big Ten this year. Give me a f---g break! Wanting to pay him based on his daddy alone! Why? Because he's young? Geez!

Ben Howland feels like he's taking crazy pills reading these posts...

Yeah, like anybody's going to give him time around here...Sweet 16 by third year or he's out.

I never said Pitino had a better résumé than Tyndall or Miller. Both are better, but I am not sure Miller is attainable, both money and if he wants to come. I think Pitino is probably better than White's. I just think Pitino could excel more quickly.

Haha. I felt silly typing that. But if we hire a Tyndall or White, our fans will have slow down the expectations. Kind of ironic.

What will change for year 6 not to be more mediocrity?

The AD realizing 5 years from now that the difference between paying $1.8 million for LA Tech or So Miss coach and $2.5-$3.0 million for Marshall is a no-brainer in the grand scheme of things. Pay the $$$ now and get the proven big name winner.
On a side note, what was FLORIDA like before Donovan landed there. He had the pedigree and was going to be a no brainer winner. I think Marshall is the man we need.

And yet they both had about the same shot of making the tournament as at large teams this year

Do not want. We don't need to hire a guy just because of his daddy's last name. We need a coach with experience for once.
