Could he? Sure, there's a whole line of people who could. In a hire like this you prefer the least amount of risk possible, there's a lot of risk in Pitino. Like others have pointed out, his resume is similar to Martin's when we hired Martin. People were pissed about that hire and don't like what he did, do you not want someone with a better resume?
I'm not bashing him, as I think he could definitely win, but hell....what says Pitino is a better hire than White? And Whites a young coach who would cost you half the salary and half the buyout, if that.
The question I keep asking myself is, if his last name wasn't Pitino would we be talking about him? I think the answer is no.
I could differentiate his résumé from Martin's, but everyone will have a different opinion on the new hire. I will not be excited about Tyndall or White. However, I do understand that either could succeed at UT. I don't know their personality or strength. I wasn't thrilled when Butch Jones was initially hired. I just think Pitino could be decent right away. Tyndall and White will need time, and the fans will have to be patient.
I always thought football was the number one priority at Tennessee. I don't think the money is going to be there like a lot of people think it's going to be.
White needs to wait on the Ole Miss job. 3 years as a head coach and zero NCAA's. This is about competing for championships not having some cheerleader on the sidelines. You want a guy that plays fast pace and plays in the NIT or do you want a guy that goes 29-7 and has been to the Final 4 three straight times like a Howland?
White has won just as much as Pitino, if not more? Why would he need time but Pitino wouldn't?
Pitino has coached in the toughest conference as a head coach and been an assistant under Donovan. White has coached in the Sun Belt and C-USA and been an assistant under Andy Kennedy. Again, we will all have our favorites. The new coach will just need time, and I feel Pitino could do more sooner than the others. JMO.
I just don't understand pitino. Tyndall, miller and White all have just as good if not better resumes, and would cost half what Pitino would.
What will change for year 6 not to be more mediocrity?
