Jay Graham’s eventual impact on our running game

At the risk of having my head removed and served to a velociraptor, I hope Jay does well and actually ends up staying here. It seems that the UT chews up Black coaches and spews them out annually these days.

{waiting for the usual "that's racist!" accusation}

It says on their coaching staff at SC. He is running backs and tight ends coach. Needs to do same thing here. Still need a special teams coach that can teach how to kick extra points and field goals and punting. And tackle better on kick offs and punt returns.

Is Chaney gonna change the O-line way of blocking? I think that has to change. And Bray has to read what a D is giving him. I know he wants to throw the ball all the time. But if he can't read what kind of D they are in we will never run the ball.

A good RB coach can clue the O-line coach on his linemen's tendencies, strengths and weaknesses. They coordinate the run game together with the OC's sign off. All three discuss the techniques and schemes they plan to use with their players, trying to maximize the strengths and limit the weaknesses. From that they game plan against the opponent each week.

I don't doubt for one minute that CJG will be a huge benefit to the team and staff. He was a heckuva good college player, played in the league, and has now coached successfully under Spurrier against the SEC. If CDD is cleaning up his act along with the players' attitudes, this could be a major step forward. Hopefully, Russell's replacement will be as well.

Graham will probably get people to listen if he wants something changed (blocking scheme). All of their jobs depend on it.

In addition to the facts that Jay Graham was instrumental in recruiting Marcus Lattimore and remains one of the top running backs, statistically, in Tennessee history, perhaps the most compelling clue regarding Jay’s immediate impact on our program can be found in the following observations and facts: “Graham impressed analysts around the country for the way he developed Lattimore into one of the top running backs in the country. Lattimore, who missed the last five games with a knee injury, should enter the 2012 season as one of the Heisman Trophy favorites.

As a result, USC's rushing attack has jumped from last in the SEC in 2009 to third this season with an average of 198.0 yard per game” (GamecockCentral.com - Graham: Difficult decision to leave USC ).

FYP. :hi:

Graham is a real good RB coach. But he alone cannot resurrect a run game. Before you say that he took USC from last in the league to 2nd in rushing between 2009-2011, slow down.

Graham had been at USC for 4 years prior to Lattimore arriving. USC was last or next to last in each of those years leaguewise in rushing. He was not the blame, it was considered in SC that the OL lacked SEC talent and SEC coaching. Finally, 3 years ago, SOS fired his longtime underachieving OL coach (John Hunt) and hired a new guy who made improvements the first season but left to be the HC at Youngstown State. That was when they hired their current OL Coach from Appalachian State. Ever since he has been there, they have gone to a zone read run offense and retooled everything about their OL training and recruiting. The last 2 years under this guy, as well as having lattimore are the keys to the much improved USC running game. Graham was a good position coach for the RB's, but the running game coordinator the past 2 years has been the OL coach from Appalachian State.

Now, if you expect graham to come to UT and be the running game guru/coordinator as well as whip the OL into shape and train them to run block, then the best you can hope for is he helps the RB's develop into better RB's. He cannot and will not be able to give a team with no running game an instant running game. Does not work like that. That is why USC was in the bottom of the league his first 4 years in rushing. They lacked the proper schemes, lineman, training, play calling, talent etc etc etc etc. Kinda where UT is right now with their run game.

uhhh.. Jay Graham was hired January 2009 as Running Backs Coach.

That guy looks pretty good. Graham evaluated and recruited him if I am not mistaken. It may take a year or two to get it right, but we are headed in the right direction.:rock:

Its been two years, need to approaching our destination in a hurry or this staff may not get more time.

Glad we have a RB coach a position that was painfull to watch this season. Hope we an figure out the correct schemes across the front to give these guys some holes to work with and hope we continue to stretch the feild with our 3 best players! Dooley needs a big year and i could sure use a glimmer of hope as a fan.

Agree, as long as Dooley and Chaney want to throw the ball around, the Vols are only going to use the run to open up the pass, and 100 yard rushing games are going to be the norm.

Having said that this is a great hire. Someone who understands the tradition and can explain what it means to wear the orange shirt. Too many ex Vols are coaching elsewhere, instead of at home.
