Jay Graham’s eventual impact on our running game

What will be the over/under on Graham calling Chaney an idiot with his blocking schemes in spring practice? I hope the Chaney Sweep is removed from the playbook and the power running game is brought back to life

I'm pretty excited about the hire. And call it what you will, but I like having a former player on the staff

I can't understand why mod's allow blatant false information to be remain on the board. Facts are facts.

(a) They only have 24 hours in a day.

(b) There needs to be historical documentation when someone is proven wrong.

Ohio State fans claim that Jay cheated because he wore cleats that were longer than regulation; which gave him better traction in the mud.
I guess any excuse that a "T.O.$.U." fan uses is as good as any, huh?

Well, a lot of UT players wore cleats that were longer than they were supposed to be...BUT screw OSU!

Had they (OSU) done it would've been seen as a crafty move on their part.

The refs didn't say anything about it and I believe at the time it was only a minor penalty for equipment malfunction or something similar.

Oh yeah, Welcome back Jay! :good!:

To become head coach at UT if Dooley shows no real improvement after next year.

"Remember the Philamo"!

I mean Fulmer sneaking around the man that hired him Johnny Major's back and taking his job from him while recovering from surgery.

I wonder if, during practice, the RB's are dancing around and Jay slaps on some pads and says "THIS is how to make a hole." and scares the crap out of the D line.

The scheme is not the problem but rather the execution. The O line is big - but needs to anger up, slim down, muscle up, and block down. Our TE's and WR's need to understand that they are also blockers for the running backs. But I do agree with you that Graham can and will bring a ton of knowledge. That Chaney sweep might not look to bad if we get a guy like Pig out in space.

Graham is a real good RB coach. But he alone cannot resurrect a run game. Before you say that he took USC from last in the league to 2nd in rushing between 2009-2011, slow down.

Graham had been at USC for 4 years prior to Lattimore arriving. USC was last or next to last in each of those years leaguewise in rushing. He was not the blame, it was considered in SC that the OL lacked SEC talent and SEC coaching. Finally, 3 years ago, SOS fired his longtime underachieving OL coach (John Hunt) and hired a new guy who made improvements the first season but left to be the HC at Youngstown State. That was when they hired their current OL Coach from Appalachian State. Ever since he has been there, they have gone to a zone read run offense and retooled everything about their OL training and recruiting. The last 2 years under this guy, as well as having lattimore are the keys to the much improved USC running game. Graham was a good position coach for the RB's, but the running game coordinator the past 2 years has been the OL coach from Appalachian State.

Now, if you expect graham to come to UT and be the running game guru/coordinator as well as whip the OL into shape and train them to run block, then the best you can hope for is he helps the RB's develop into better RB's. He cannot and will not be able to give a team with no running game an instant running game. Does not work like that. That is why USC was in the bottom of the league his first 4 years in rushing. They lacked the proper schemes, lineman, training, play calling, talent etc etc etc etc. Kinda where UT is right now with their run game.

I would be willing to bet that Graham can put a bug in Dooley's ear about needing to tweak the schemes, training, play calling, talent etc and it will take him much less time than 4 years since he saw the big difference in Carolina during his time there...

I promise you one thing. It will not take Gay Graham long to determine that Chaney sucks. He may not have the ba__s to tell this to Dolley but he will see on his own.

Lattimore helped that a lot, but Graham is an excellent coach and recruiter, so he will definitely help us!

Graham's impact on USC's running game is being GROSSLY overstated. Lattimore would have done well no matter who was coaching him. You can't teach vision, balance and toughness. Lattimore had an abundance of all three the day that he stepped onto the USC campus.

When Lane came out after a short run in the Kentucky game, the cam showed Dooley putting his arm over Lane's shoulders and giving him a bit of coaching. I'd guess that it was the same ole same-o. I really think we need Coach Graham.

We have the history and tradition of LOTS of NFL RBs.

We now have a coach who should be able to recruit more of them.

My favorite game of his was when he outrushed Eddie George after George won the Heisman.

Thank you. :good!:

My former boss still owes me $5 on that game. :)

You make an interesting point, ReelfootVol. But my take is a bit different. Good coaches do more than coach and recruit. They represent their positions in the scheme, professionally with the other coaches. Graham impresses me as a competent professional who will do all those things well. Homerism aside, I think Dooley made a good hire.
