Jauan Jennings interview

Maybe I am getting soft as I get older. But seeing him smiling and happy behind the mic made me smile. Seems like he has matured a good bit, in good shape, doing well. Not sure if he makes the cut, but happy for the young man.

He has apparently had a great offseason and it seems very likely he’ll make the team

I have always thought that Jennings' career hit all the beats that you read about in college football.

He was a highly ranked recruit and went through all that fanfare of committing.
He got in a fight before ever arriving on campus and people worried that it could affect his status on the team.
He was a special teams spark, and people began to love his gritty style of play.
He played with an edge and he became the player that sometimes got you penalized, but the trade off was worth it.
He made an all-time play.
He had a season where he was incredibly clutch, and displayed toughness while also becoming a hero.
He lost a season to injury.
He could have come back, but the coaches refused.
He got kicked off the team after one of the greatest video tirades ever.
He got the redemption arc to earn his way back on the team.
He had a final season where he put it all together to become the heart and soul of the team.

It's hard to imagine a player will soon embody all of those things to a fanbase, all while genuinely giving off the air that he loves UT in the same way as the multi-degree alumnus and the fan that never had a shot to darken the school's doors. JJ will always be one of us.

...the feisty, physical, speed-challenged wideout who blocks with abandon and led Division I wide receivers by forcing 30 missed tackles as a senior at Tennessee has been hard to miss since he made his summer debut Aug. 6. Jennings, 6-foot-3 and 212 pounds, even radiates energy off the field: He cheerfully offered reporters a high-decibel how-you-doing greeting as he strode to the podium after practice Tuesday.

“He plays like his hair is on fire,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said. “And I think a lot of our receivers can learn from watching him.”

...And here comes Jennings, 24, termed an “old-school” receiver by Shanahan. That’s because he delights in doing dirty work at a position often associated with diva personalities. Jennings had one catch for 26 yards in his 38-snap NFL debut Saturday in the preseason opener while distinguishing himself with his blocking. Shanahan views blocking by wideouts as a crucial element of the running game. “If you watched him in the running game, he really got after it trying to bring the maximum effort every play,” Shanahan said. “How he dug out those safeties on blocks, how he’s blocking on the backside, on the corners.”

Your post made me think of the elements of The Hero's Journey, below.

Also: If he is getting 38 snaps in the opener, followed by high praise from the HC, it seems likely they'll be finding a spot for him.

I'd love to see it happen.

From what I read, he is going to make the team as they don't have very good depth there. Only played 6 WRs in their preseason game, and he's the by far the biggest. Most teams keep 5-6 WRs, sometimes more if one is a point returner. He seems to be safe imo.

SockeyeVol, sounds like you are familiar with Joseph Campbell and his work regarding the mythologies from various cultures. A fascinating rabbit hole. Of course, there are remarkable similarities between cultural mythologies because, in our past, we all stood around the same campfire at one time. All descendants of Noah and the Tower of Babel.

Caspian, I actually am not familiar with Joseph Campbell, so will look him up. Thanks for the tip.

It may be that we all shared the same campfire. But I have always thought the universality of the “Hero’s Journey” motif to be more that it’s a very common, relatable human experience....and that in every culture, there is some observer who documents it perfectly.

Homer did it in The Odyssey. Charles Frazier did it in Cold Mountain. And so on.

He’s my favorite Vol of the last decade. My kids got his autograph when he was a freshman on crutches after the Orange and White game. Nicest guy you’ll ever meet. A true TN legend. Tough as nails on the field and great to fans. Btw, Garrantono was a young committed recruit and was a complete ashole.

I remember when Jennings was removed from the team after his video rant - I was ready to riot. Forget Kiffin mattressmania, I was going to get seriously, SERIOUSLY pissed if they cut him loose over that. Jennings was as Tennessee as anyone I'd ever seen wear orange. When they cut him from the team it felt like they were cutting me from the team. Ah, I was livid.

All this to say he is an all-time Vol legend for us and I wish him every success in the football world for it.
