Jarnell Stokes projected in first round per Chad Ford

I follow the Memphis grizzlies and have said for years that stokes is a clone of zach Randolph. He's a little shorter than most post players and a little over weight. But he bangs down low. He gets about 15- 25points and 15 rebounds a game . The guy wears down the other teams big men. He's a fan favorite for his blue collar work style. He gets it done. Just needs to develop a jumper like zbo did

Yes! I would love to see that!

You think they take the series lead tonight? Two home wins would be huge.

I don't understand the "needs to lose weight" comment. Wasn't Stokes like 6% body fat or something crazy like that? Seriously, how much weight could he possibly lose without losing muscle?

Probably several other guys I can't think of right now, but Ben Wallace and Dennis Rodman both averaged almost twice as many rebounds as points for their careers. Everybody doesn't have to be a big scorer. Rebound and play defense. Depends on team needs.

NBA is so different from college ball its weird. A guy like Hopson or McRae who could drop 20+ a night won't see the floor because they are 2 inches too short or a step too slow. A guy like stokes might not even leave the bench because of "deficiencies" that don't exist in the college game. The best way to look at the NBA is simple. Each team has no more than 15 spots, at most, and there are 30 teams. You draft from the entire world + the guys already in the league. It's the smallest of the professional sports for a reason. If you aren't at least elite in one category, you probably aren't even getting looked at.

From my one viewing of Marble of Iowa, I like McRae's potential and production over his and would pick McRae ahead of Marble.

Stokes is moving up the boards. I saw a BR mock draft that had him going 27th and on nbadraft.net has him going 35th. Would love to see him sneak into the 1st round and have my Thunder pick him up.

Mock drafts typically have more Americans drafted in the 2nd round than what actually happens.

Reasons why....Mock draft experts aren't as familiar with foreigners and American players will generate more Internet traffic.

That said, I hope both get drafted.

Maybe I'm wrong, I claim myself as no expert, but in my mind isn't Stokes just a better version of "Big Baby" Davis?? Davis has been in the league for a while and has always found his way onto the floor. I believe there is a spot in the league for him, not as a star but as a solid contributor.

Not a bad comparison. Their have been a few recently that I think he could do just as well as they have. Dejuan Blair and Trevor Booker come to mind as well. Booker has a little better hops, but I think Stokes could be a better rebounder than both.

For the last couple of years I have thought Stokes success in the NBA would be predicated on how well his offensive game translates. But the 'Big Baby' comparison kinda shoots that thought in the foot.

Big baby seemed to have a little more range. I think Dejuan Blair and Jared Sullinger are good comparisons. And I think he'll fall somewhere between their draft spots. Both contribute tho.

I think stokes will be one of those bench players who occasionally go off for a 25 and 16 game or more. Otherwise I could see him averaging something like 8 and 8 consistently.

I could see Stokes maybe getting 8 and 8--max--in an off-the-bench role. I think his size and limited offensive skills will be a problem for him, but NBA teams of course don't always play a lot of defense. Defensive intensity varies greatly from team to team, from night to night.

Don't sell him short. Didn't he just turn 20 years old? His game is far from fully developed. He improved his FT % from .567 his somphmore year to .696 his junior year. He also showed an expanded offensive skill set his junior year. CCM was using Stokes how UT needed him the most, not developing him for the NBA. I think Stokes will improve a significant amount over the next 2-3 years and become a solid NBA player - at least I'm rooting for him to get there. By all accounts he's a solid citizen who appeared to use his head on the court and will work hard to improve. His size doesn't translate to a lottery pick, but if I were an NBA GM I'd take a chance on him in the mid to low 1st round.

Sullinger is virtually a stretch four. Plays around the perimeter the most out of the three you mentioned. I do think Blair and Davis are good comparisons though.

Davis has a consistent 15-footer that we have yet to see from Stokes. Maybe he has it, or maybe he develops it. His improvement at the FT line suggests that his mechanics are moldable to have that shot in his arsenal. IMO, he needs it to succeed. He needs to be at least a little bit of a threat offensively from somewhere, and aside from garbage putbacks on offensive rebounds, I'm not sure he'll make it offensively in the paint as an NBA player. An outside shot would do him wonders.

That would be awesome if Stokes goes in the first round. He represented the Vols with class his 3 years here. A true VFL.

Big Baby and Sullinger both have much more range than Stokes, and Blair is a better athlete. Stokes has to develop a jumper or he'll be out of the league in a few years.
