It is easy to place the blame on Crompton, but there are other issues. Last week, Jones was unhappy after the Ohio game. This past week, there were issues in practice that required addressing by CLK in a post-practice talk. Like it or not, Jones seems to have a great amount of influence over this receiver corps; this influence showed in last nights game.
Crompton was inaccurate during the first part of the game, and he struggled, but no receiver helped him. On many plays, when Crompton moved in the pocket to gain time for the recivers to work, no receiver broke off the route to come back to help. I saw many catchable passes get deflected into the ground by the receivers hands. It was obvious to the most casual observer that Hancock and Moore did not make an effort to catch a pass until Jones started playing in the fourth quarter.
CLK is at a cross road with the team. Will the informal field leader win, or will CLK take control of this team, play the young receivers, and starting building a talented passing corps for the future? The practice decisions made this week (which receivers get the reps) will provide insight into what type of coach we really have with Kiffin.
