It just got more expensive to storm the field

Seriously though - you do have a school like Clemson where fans do gather on the field after games. It is part of the tradition and not really "storming the field". I've seen similar situations on the high school level, where it is more of the fans gathering with the football team in support - win or lose. Those situations, because it is a common thing are generally orderly, and fans remain in control.

But because over the years we have put up fences and such and not allowed the activity with the excuse of protecting the field, players and fans - we are left with situations where in moments of high emotion fans get carried away - and because it is something they are not allowed to regularly do in an orderly fashion - chaos reigns because they are doing a once in a lifetime thing.

Sometimes the madness is the result of the rules being broken when if the situation were different, the madness would not occur.

The bottom line is UT has entered the group of schools that NEVER need to storm the field in any sport. If you want to be treated like the big boys then act like it.

Personally, I think folks put too much thought into this. I strongly dislike the thought of "acting like you have been there" mentality such that the team or the fans should never really celebrate. That is more of the result of teams who have fans that sit on their hands being upset because their fans don't get excited enough to really celebrate. It leads to what I experienced in Columbus after the OSU victory where the OSU fans were more about taunting Tennessee fans than celebrating their victory.

I hope Tennessee or the fans NEVER get to the point where winning a game against any team becomes boring or "just another victory / day at the office".

A victory against all odds, a victory that wins a championship, a stunning comeback, overcoming controversary to win - most of the times when a team storms the field it is because winning the game really meant something at that moment in time. I get not doing it every game - but sometimes it is just the result of pent-up emotion.

I think some over think what is really just a reaction resulting from folks living in the moment and getting caught up in the emotion of that moment.
