Were these kids that we're cutting all on scholarship? If so, how does the UT athletic department boot someone off of scholarship to free up room for others? Can they do it for violation of team rules, or something like that? The fact that he can't play 2 minutes without picking up a technical might have something to do with it. I'm sure he's gone. Cutting out the chaff (Passley, Marques Johnson - remember him?) makes more room for the wheat, gives us one more scholly to give for next year.
Johnson trasnsferred so he forfeited his scholly. Players can get released from scholarships on an annual basis if they just aren't earning it. Schollys are a yearly renewal, not a 4 year "contract." Ethically, schollys are viewed as a 4 year commitment from both parties (student/athlete and universtity), however when one party doesn't fulfil the expectations, the other party is not obligated to renew said yearly commitment. Were these kids that we're cutting all on scholarship? Better to have it for later anyway as the McClain kid seems to be the only talent that we can get that is worth it for 2007, unless there is some sleeper JUCO I don't know about. Get McClain and move on to the next year. As stated in the recruiting forum, 2008 class could be sick and better than the current group of freshman. Imagine the 2006 group being SRs. and the 2008 group being Sophs. Fun times ahead.:dance2: :rock:The problem with Tony likely being gone is that this could take away that scholly for this coming class because of APR. We wouldn't take more than 1 in the spring anyways so it really doesn't matter.
Thank you for that explanation. It sounds like Bruce is laying down high standards for performance and conduct, which in my opinion is good and is long overdue.Johnson trasnsferred so he forfeited his scholly. It's dicey to deal with from a recruiting perspective to have a coach basically say, "Get to work or get out," but I like it. Imagine how this tactic might work for the FB team if Fulmer did it. There are NO free rides.Thank you for that explanation. It sounds like Bruce is laying down high standards for performance and conduct, which in my opinion is good and is long overdue.
On the other hand, if Pearl and his staff can start developing a steady line of players into the NBA, I think a lot of recruits will weigh that risk/reward favorably and jump into the pipeline. It's dicey to deal with from a recruiting perspective to have a coach basically say, "Get to work or get out," but I like it. Lofton, Smith, Smith, Crews, Chism, Bradshaw, Childress, Howell, Tabb, and Passley (for now) are on scholarship that I know of. That's 10. I believe the max for BB is 13. Bradshaw leaving makes 9. Tatum, Williams, Prince, and McClain (hopefully) would put us at 13. So technically getting McClain would be in lieu of Wingate. If we don't get him, then we would have a total of 5 open (if Passley is really gone) to offer for the 2008 class of recruits.if thats the case, then did we get an extra scholarship from wingate being dismissed?
The lowdown is this. His 4 choices are UConn, UF, Cincy, and UT. He wants playing time and UConn already has a C that will play 30+ minutes a game if he doesn't bolt for the pros, which is now unlikely. UF may or may not have a scholly available. Which basically leaves Cincy and UT. Kind of a toss up there as both can offer plaing time. He said he wants to visit Knoxville, but he may not until later in the spring perhaps even summer. He probably won't announce anytime soon.I keep hearing talk about McClain... what are UT's realistic chances of landing him and does anyone know when he's planning on committing/announcing?
