The Vols had so many chances to win a National Title in the 80s but would drop a loss or 2 to a ******** team like you said. Drove me and my dad crazy.I remember those days. UT would lose a game they had no business losing then follow it up with a great win.
The 88 team was 5-6 after starting 0-6. After that season, Walt Harris was fired as offensive coordinator and Phil Fulmer was promoted to offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator and they went 11-1. They where co SEC Champs with Alabama and Auburn. 1990 team was 9-2-2 was SEC champs because Florida was on NCAA probation. The 1985 team was SEC Champs because Florida was on NCAA probation. The Vols had so many chances to win a National Title in the 80s but would drop a loss or 2 to a ******** team like you said. I think the 85, 88, and 89 VOLS Teams could have beaten anyone to be honest though. They were Majors Teams at its best
vol fan but...........i'm really a gator fan?The 88 team was 5-6 after starting 0-6. So if Florida had not been in trouble with the NCAA, the 85 team does not win the SEC and the Sugar Bowl doesn't happen. The 90 team doesn't win if Florida is not in NCAA trouble. The 89 team was in a 3 way tie for the title. If Florida doesn't get caught, Tennessee doesn't win two of Major's titles. If they did it the way they do it now, they would have played Auburn for the SEC title. If they had won that game they would have been champs. Had they lost, Majors would have had zero SEC titles.
As for all the great 80's teams, most where not good. But 1987 they went 10-2-1. Lost to Alabama and Boston College and tied Auburn. BC was unranked and was 5-6 that year. Alabama was 7-5 that year and unranked. So no, Tennessee had no chances in the 1980's to win a National Championship.
Majors had mediocre teams, but the 1985 Team, 89 team really could have beat anyone i think. I know Majors had top 10 finishes in the AP during the 80s, so that what I mean about how The Vols really missed some great chances to win one that decade . I didn't remember Majors 88 team being that bad tho, its been a while hahaThe 88 team was 5-6 after starting 0-6. i know he's right. but all that stuff did happen, and we won/shared those conference titles. so what's the point in the revisionist history, 30 years later, unless Coach Pell is still butt hurt?Hes right , my mind forgot some of Majors early 80s seasons. Lol.
But if UT didnt lose to Bama in 89, they could have been AP National champs. That was the only loss
I'll never forget how our only loss was to a top 10 team and somehow we weren't even talked about in the national title scenario of one loss teams. It made no sense.Hes right , my mind forgot some of Majors early 80s seasons. Lol.

I think you might be right. I remember an insider telling me that 2 coaching changes in 14 months was going to be devastating and might take 5 years+ to recover from. I thought he was overreacting.....I’d say the night Kiffin walked was the worst in hindsight. Because it triggered a series of bad luck and misery that has lasted for about 10 years.
i know. freaking bama.I'll never forget how our only loss was to a top 10 team and somehow we weren't even talked about in the national title scenario of one loss teams. It made no sense.
Yup and the SEC was super stiff competition that year. Even Arkansas was great that year. UT did finish #5 but man they were a special teamI'll never forget how our only loss was to a top 10 team and somehow we weren't even talked about in the national title scenario of one loss teams. I cant stand Oklahoma. Always root against them. Their fans are arrogant based on my interactions with em.i know. freaking bama.
i'll never forget after the 85 sugar bowl complaining to my dad that we just throttled Miami, who beat OU, but OU wont he title, and i was like "BS!"...lol.
those were still some of hte most fun teams i've ever watched....
