Is this the most depressing time in UT history?

Random post in meaningless thread [no offense to starter of meaningless thread since it just found its value]. Had a "run-in" with EA downtown this afternoon during Dogwood Expo. Shocked how big that joker is, but has normal size hands:ermm:. He was gracious to take time to chat about the future of TN ball. Then I realized that for some of us we just keep towing the VOL agenda and the majority keep crying about a what we wish would happen. Thanks Erik for introducing yourself to me and helping to draw the line between Tennesse Vols and the rest who feed off of us.
p.s. We need a coach who says we suck if its obvious

So what did EA think about Vols overall? Let me guess he said, “Pruitt will be successful but it’s going to take some time.” Then he didn’t define “success” or “time”.

We just had our worst season ever.
We just had the worst coaching search ever.
Bama is rolling as usual. UGA has a real coach. UF hired a quality coach. Muschamp owns the Vols. Looks like we’re headed for 3rd or 4th in the East every season.

Has UT football ever been in a more depressing position? I’m almost 40 and have never seen our position in the landscape like this.
On upswing now. Another year of butch would be the most depressing time in ut history. Black clouds are clearing.

There is no tangible evidence that Pruitt will do good here. I would have rather hired a coach with some previous HC experience such as Mike Bobo over Pruitt who i don’t think will handle the pressure and fans and media very well. I mean we are already witnessing that.

Well, it doesn't matter if they hired the winningest coach in the world or a total unknown. There will always be somebody saying, "I would have rather hired....."

The man hasn't coached game 1 (unless you count the O&W game). But you gotta be the long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs about it. Let see how the man deal with a season, a player incident, something really meaningful before we wring our hands. Handling the fans and media is the penny ante part of it. So lighten up. Francis.

yes last tear was horrible no doubt but we were 18-8 the 2 yrs before. We do have a foundation we haven't had a builder. Ala the team that the under 40's think has never lost a game was 14-23 in 98-00 and 10-15 in 03-04. So may be we aren't as far removed as some one have you believe. (maybe we are) Either way give the new staff a chance or jump on the next new train that comes by. A couple of years from now when the orange train comes by don't try to jump back on. you may get run over

Wonder if Bama fans were saying the same thing the turn of the century? From 2000-2007 they had been through 4 coaches and were 56-46 , had a 3-8 season and had just hired Saban in 2007 and he went 7-6. Maybe not quite as bad as what we have been through the last 10 years but every team has a " downturn" at some point. I truly think Pruitt is the guy that will turn us around if fans will be patient and give him 3-4 seasons..

Florida still has better talent and a better roster than we do going into this season plus getting Mullen was big. I think he will do great there. I can see Florida winning 8 or 9 games this season.

Not sure where the assumption they have better talent & a better roster comes from.
Getting Pruitt was big as well.
Florida's schedule consists of Tennessee, Georgia, LSU & Free Shoes U. 8-4 losing those four games isn't good at all. Florida is not so great & they will not win any games merely because their helmet reads "Gators". Mullen may do well & he may not. No guarantee. No way to tell as of yet. Certainly nothing to fear.

Exactly. 95 through 2001 Alabama was not even an issue. Everybody goes through ups and downs. Tennessee had been relatively good for so long folks thought it couldn't happen to us. And maybe if we did NOT mismanage the Fulmer transition then we wouldn't have fell off like we did. At any rate, I'm certainly not depressed @ the though of Big Orange Football. Not hardly.

Dooley in orange pants is very close to the lowest point. Losing 2 years to Vanderbilt is also very close. Not scoring from inside the half yard line against Florida is very close. Kicking possible wnning field goal to beat Alabama into the chest of Alabama rusher is also very close.

Team went 0-6 in 1988 and followed up with 5 straight wins and an 11-1 season in 1989. Things can change in a hurry.

Not remotely confident that happens with this coach though. Defensive scheme alone will probably take a couple of seasons to implement and recruit for best case.

Fulmer in charge gives me the most hope for the overall health of the program. We might be too far behind for it to make much difference though.

Fulmer in charge is the very reason I am pessimistic.

The man said 8 wins was enough at TN when he started coming under fire and was slow to replace Sanders when it obviously wasn't working.

The sunshine pumpers can roll in and talk about how much he has changed since being fired but I have yet to see anything to suggest he was actually humbled by the experience.

I think you can like or not like Fulmer in AD spot (I do). But, at this point in time, it's hard to argue that he hasn't brought unity and sense of common direction to what has been an entirely dysfunctional organization, really since Dickey retired.

At the risk of being accused of stalking, heh...

I would love to see any documented evidence that Phil Fulmer ever said "8 wins is enough at TN".

Any quote of him by a reputable source (not some dude on VN.com...because, I mean, you're some dude on VN.com right?) would be fine.

You are more than welcome to whatever opinion you wish to hold about Fulmer. I just think if you're going to throw accusations out there, you should be prepared to back them up.

Thanks.

Yeah, I was very sceptical of the Fulmer hire as AD, but the results speak for themselves. He turned around an absolutely horrible situation.

Time will tell if Pruitt was the right hire, but he got someone that knows a lot about winning in the SEC, and in big-time football. Whether he can do it as the head coach at Tennessee is still in question, but it was a top-notch hire under the circumstances.
