I must be missing something(not new to me), if a 3rd year walk-on plays before a highly touted recruit, doesn't that mean the walk-on has developed and that why he is playing and not the recruit.
Unless since the recruit isn't playing it means that he isn't being developed, but why would anyone think a true freshman should play before a 3rd year guy even if the on that has been around a while is a walk-on.
Agreed. The LBs have not been developed. What an opportunity for Bryant and Bates, yet they are no where.Great recruiter, not a great developer of talent. Our back-up MLB was a former walk-on. Whatever happened to Gavin Bryant and Dillon Bates? Why has it taken a ton of injuries to finally see Eliot Berry on the field? He has obvious athletic ability, but has been poorly coached. Thig's saving grace is his recruiting. Without that, he's nothing.

Because Jumper wasn't SEC level good. Sure, he was fine for a walk-on. The fact that we can watch him and know the guys behind him must be worse points to development not taking place. If Jumper were playing lights out, then your argument would fit better.
Some could (and did) argue that Martinez was a good coach because Sutton balled out. Over time, Sutton proved to be the outlier, as clearly those around him were not developing. Sutton just had raw talent and instincts. Nothing has shown me that JRM and Kirkland aren't Thigpen's outliers. Guys three years in the system aren't cutting it. Guys with good offers. There are always busts, but they all shouldn't bust.
There is also the possibility that some players are not as good as folks thought they were coming out of high school.
Then there is also the factor of whether they are up to doing the work it takes to succeed at the next level.
It is not just in sports - but some folks who were extra ordinary academically in high school even become average in college.
3rd string? As in our 5th or 6th linebacker? Nah. He played in every game, started 7 of em. He was not 3rd string last season

A great recruiter shouldn't be so bad at recognizing the talent at his own position. You can't afford to miss on that many recruits. And was Eliot Berry a miss as well, given how long it has taken him to see the field(which really only happened because of all the injuries)?
Or it could mean Shoop is a coordinator and Thig is a position coach?
Or Shoop negotiated in his contract to always fly first class when he signed?
