Looks like UT made roughly $70,000,000 in profit last year on football alone.

You don't fire a coach for one season of not meeting expectations. That's dumb. Herman loses two ugly ones, against teams with inferior talent, and half them his board wants him as our coach. Sometimes you crap the bed.

No, you don't fire a coach for one bad season. However, warning signs, bells and whistles have to be going off. How can a team lead by three year players and roster stuffing become so impotent? How after three years of ball safety can you become one of the worst in the country? How can past teams who were so careful and being one of of the best in penalties now be penalized so often and in critical situations? How can every game, regardless of opponent be life or death in the fourth quarter? Something is going on and that much is obvious. This is a very hard team to watch for four quarters, especially having watched these almost same players grow for the last three years.
Sorry, but with UT, there is no money issue. All of these boosters that are worth 750 Million or more could end this with a drop of a hat, regardless of what university admin says, thinks, or feels. These boosters would rather "renovate" Neyland than spend a 1/10th of that money to actually hire a 5 star coach. Morons.
I've been a Tennessee supporter for more years than I want to admit. However, other than Johnny Major ( and maybe Barnes if you consider him one), UT has never spent the money to hire a "name" coach. Their pattern has nearly always been to place a cheap bet on a long shot and hope for a good return on its investment. I can't imagine the University doing anything else.Sorry, but with UT, there is no money issue. Well first off we haven't had to make many hires with our stability. It was a lot of years with Majors and then a lot of years of Fulmer right after.
But I don't think it's true that we've been too cheap. We shelled out a lot of money for the "best staff in the country" when Kiffin was here with his dad and Oregeron as part of that staff.
We have been very cheap IMO. Especially with head coaches. I have no proof but I suspect Hart didnt open up the checkbook when looking for Dooleys replacement. Now, some have said no big time coaches were interested in the job and that might be true. But since we will never know who was officially contacted and interviewed, its all speculation. I just feel like Hart went with his safe pick, a guy whom he knew and liked as opposed to someone with a better resume.

He balked at half a million increase to get Strong, who would have brought a million times better staff than Butch. Shame!
You have to be kidding or you are out to lunch. Strong is likely to be fired this year and has some of the best recruits money can buy. We are very fortunate that he turned us down.
