In my opinion, yes.
I was driving yesterday morning and ESPN radio was playing touchdown calls from around the nation. Of course each call was from the hometown radio voice ie Eli Gold for Bama, etc. I was impressed by almost all of the ones I heard. The sad part is when they play the Vols the voice you hear is Kesling.
I just can't recall another broadcaster trying to sound so enthusiastic and failing so miserably.
I imagine that if I were to suddenly get into the broadcasting business and got hired to call Florida or Bama games, I would announce touchdowns with all the gusto of a person who really wasn't a fan of the team... because, y'know, I'm not a Florida or Bama fan.
That's what Kessling sounds like to me. I don't really mind the "into the checkerboards" line, but his delivery absolutely sucks. It sucks so bad that every Monday during football season, there seems to be a new thread talking about how bad Kessling sucks. That's a testament, I think, to how bad he truly does suck as a radio guy.
If John Ward used "into the checkerboards," it would be everybody's favorite line because John Ward is(was) a Vol fan who lives and dies with every other Vol fan on each down played. Even if John Ward were NOT a vol fan, his ability as a radio announcer would make you believe that he was.
Kessling is incapable of that kind of broadcasting.
Kessling is the Jon Crompton of radio broadcasting.
Sad that we all keep saying the same thing over and over each Monday.
