Is It Really Holly's Fault

Can we really blame Holly for the various Lady Vol debacles and inconsistencies? Just maybe she is a victim of her environment. She learned at the feet of one of the greatest, if not the greatest, basketball coaches to grace a women's basketball sideline. Holly has limited experience with any other coach or team. In the past, the Lady Vols had the best women's basketball players on the planet, however, that is not the case today. All the best players are not playing in Knoxville, they are spread among the top 10 to 15 teams. What won for the Lady Vols in the past will no longer get it done. Women now play the inside/outside game, they play a version of the motion offense and the good teams are physical. Top coaches all display a version of the Summitt stare, they don't simply pat you on the butt and say, "that's okay." They know how to make game changes on the fly and have plans that don't necessarily stop the other team's best scorer but at least make their shots difficult.

Maybe as an assistant and player, Holly realized too much success and very little adversity. Just maybe the Lady Vols, being so dominant in their hay day, made winning seem too easy, all you had to do is get a bunch of 5 stars and you were guaranteed success. All the early Lady Vol success and the intimidation, that automatically brought fear to their opponents to the point they were defeated before the initial jump ball, made losing unthinkable.

Maybe, it is simply the fact that Holly may never get it because she does not have the mettle to be a successful head coach.

Her teams have consistently performed beneath their talent. I see examples week-after-week of poorly coached players not having a clue. Look, there are countless instances in sports of qualified assistants with vast knowledge being incapable of steering the ship.

So we are getting the top recruits in the country, we have a well established program, awesome facilities, awesome fans, and we continue to set new lows in the program. It's amazing that Holly can mess this up. She has a talent for making the easy look impossible, and it's terrible these girls have to endure this crap. Get her out of Knoxville before she gets more loss records. Get her out while we still have a program to save. Never have I seen piss poor effort, lake of awareness, and lack of defense like I have seen while she has been at the helm.

Even if it isn't Holly's fault, it's Holly's responsibility to own the state of the program and the team, and to make the changes to improve it. That's what being the head coach is about. And right now, with the team's lack of leadership and poise, not to mention teamwork, I think it's incumbent upon her to grab the microphone and own this situation. Maybe she didn't cause it (maybe) but she should be vocal about fixing it.
