The simple answer is tribalism which is still in our nature today. If my side does it, it’s fine, but if someone else does it, now it’s not fine. This happens in politics, religion, even sports team affiliation. All logic and rationalization goes out the door when tribalism enters the pictureLol, because you're afraid of people in the US who make up less than 2% of the population "bringing violence and taking over the government" because you're afraid of their religion, but when it's your people doing the same thing, you have no problem with it.
Right-wing evangelicals have more in common with the taliban and other extremist muslims than they care to admit.
