Maybe, maybe not. We’ll never know. But Hirohito thought about for 3 days and had a chance to capitulate and didn’t. Second bomb forced it. I can’t question Truman and the leadership if they didn’t want to risk hundreds of thousands of additional casualties by invading. Obviously I wasn’t there (my parents were though) but I can guarantee the vast majority of the US population was glad to see it end by any means necessary.

Another thing to consider is our dropping both bombs has probably saved the world from another being used since.

Russia was well on their way to having their own bombs(s) and without the real world demonstration of their destruction who knows. My guess is that we’d have already seen a nuclear exchange between countries.

Trump on TV being interviewed saying the Strait doesn't matter bc we don't get oil from there. Can someone, anyone, explain to this MFer how this works. Either he thinks we are all stupid, which is possible, or he's an idiot on this
Definitely thinks we are stupid, especially his base

I understand the reasoning. And as I get older I understand how many lies we are told by our government. We gave them 3 days then killed 40K more civilians. It was unnecessary. They probably would've surrendered or come to some kind of terms. Jmo.

Revisionist history nonsense. There was a literal attempted coup after the second bomb because many of their leaders still fully opposed surrender.

My Grandpa enlisted December, 8th, 1942 (rip gramps), and got rewarded with a trip to Europe. They were considering giving him a trip to the pacific, too! He never did complain about not getting that trip. I hate to sound selfish, but I'm glad he didn't.

From a pragmatic standpoint, it's hard to look at it differently. We knew the Soviets had the resources and would develop their own nukes. They actually surprised us and were several years ahead of the timeline we thought it would take them. A lot of previously classified Kremlin documents since came out (post USSR collapse), showing that the Germans were closer than we realized and the Russians benefited.

A world without nukes is a nice ideal, but not the hand we were dealt.
