Iowa State Matchup

I’ve only watched Iowa St this past weekend, but to me they’ve got nothing offensively over Miles and Tanner and I’m not sure they’re better defensively than those 2 either. JMO
I don't know who Miles and Tanner are, and I appreciate your confidence, but there's a reason we're a 4.5 point underdog. This is a team that won at Purdue by 23, also beat Houston, smashed Kansas, beat St. John's, and lost on a buzzer-beater vs. Arizona just two weeks ago.

If you're talking about Tamin Lipsey and Milan Momcilovic, they still get 35 pts per game from other players not named Joshua Jefferson. And they just destroyed Kentucky without him - something we couldn't close the deal on this season.

What did TCU and BYU do to beat them?

You jumped in mid-conversation as Uneducated was comparing Iowa St to Vandy and Turner / Miles are the Vandy guards. Also, I’ve made no prediction against Iowa St yet. I do think we have a realistic chance to win, but I also see several ways Iowa St can come out with the win. As has been for most of this season, I see our biggest challenge being ourselves not following the game plan along with being sloppy with the ball leading to turn overs.

He's been a disappointment, BUT did you watch the game against Virginia? He is a good rebounder and can be effective on the offensive end at times with the right matchups

Good Afternoon Bernard King, Knower of All Hoops Knowledge

What is your prognostication for our game vs The Cyclones this Friday??

Cheers!

My mistake. Instead of "uneducated" perhaps you could've said "Miles and Tanner from Vandy" or simply pointed out I misunderstood you. You know, like a normal human being.

Are you possibly confusing “Uneducated” which is the forum name of the person I was responding to with me calling you uneducated? Take a look at post #19 on this thread and it may provide some clarity.

P.S. southgateVol isn’t a Jackass - he’s also trying to help you with the confusion.

Very good defensive team. The thing that scares me is the way they blitzed the point guard on ball screens Which we use a lot to keep Gillespie free. Both players jump out and smother the point guard who picks up his dribble and can’t find a place to pass. The only thing that helps when they do this is maybe our size. It’s sure easier to get it to someone nearly 7 ft (JP, FO, NA) than another guard. The key seems to me to be that when we beat that trap we have to be aggressive in that 4 on 3 scenario. i worry that we will be so happy to break the trap that we slow down and wait to get it back to JG to run the offense. We have to get shots up to have a chance to rebound. No rebounds with shot clock violations. The best news is that we have a coach that is way smarter than me and I feel pretty good about his ability to come up with a way to shut them down and scheme up enough offense when he has 4 days to get ready.

The tournament is so often about matchups. How do we matchup against Iowa State? One thought I have heard is that they are excellent at the guard position in creating ball pressure which leads to turnovers and bad passes. How will JG and Boswell perform seems to be a key to the game??
I wonder if we play some sort of Modified match up type zone 3/2 to put additional pressure on their guards. Sure others have tried it. Will also need clean game on boards and lights out from 3 with an Ament showtime UVA+ type game. Other than that we should be good ;-). Kids could be gelling at right time-Or we peaked with a 16 showing. Will be fun to see.

I backtracked through the thread and now I understand. My apologies - that’s the problem with written text without context, it’s easy to be misunderstood.

No gimmicks. Just the usual help required to play tough defense

I don't think zone is in Rick Barnes' vocabulary, although personally I would love to see a different look every now and again. Zones absolutely have their place, IMHO!

Beating us when we should’ve wiped the floor with them.
To provide context, in Iowa State’s four head-scratching losses this year (I don’t count losing twice to Arizona and at Kansas), here is what did them in:

@ Cincinnati (lost 79-70 on Jan 17th):
outrebounded 39-32, committed 12 turnovers (compared to 8 for the Bearcats), and were 17-27 on FTs (63%).

@TCU (lost 62-55 on Feb. 10th):
Went 2-8 from the FT line while the Frogs were 15-23, outrebounded 36-32, led 55-50 with 2:38 left before TCU scored the final 12pts of the game.

@BYU (lost 79-69 on Feb. 21st):
outrebounded 39-28 and outscored 40-22 in the paint

Vs. Texas Tech (lost 82-73 on Feb. 28th):
outrebounded 35-29 and outscored 30-24 in the paint

Looks like we need to control the boards and outscore them in the paint to have a chance. Putting them on the line wouldn’t be a bad strategy, either.

I think he has a press conference at 3, hopefully they pepper him with questions about it.

While I’m filling expecting some kind of coach-speak non-answer about Jefferson’s injury I’d expect questions about that too
