Saw this sign in 1988 when we started out 0 - 6 and we called for Johnny Majors head....Called him a drunk, has been and blah blah blah.....3 years later when Major's was having health problems in comes Fulmer and our fanbase was divided because half wanted Fulmer the other said Fulmer played dirty pool!! 7 years later we won the NC!!

After that our expectations grew so high that no one could live up to them!! We were competitive between 1998 and 2007 with 2 bad years in between that every coach with any tenure has endured!!

2008 til 2010 was a debacle and an embarrassment to our football program!!

Derek Dooley is under fire and loved just like Fulmer....he is being held to the standard that Fulmer set by winning the National Championship and in 2 1/2 short seasons he is building something of the model Fulmer did in the mid 90's!! My dad didn't like Fulmer til the day he died for what he did to Johnny Majors and he was a ticket holder his entire adult life.....

What I am trying to say is that our fanbase gets everything we ask for...some cases good, some cases bad...Fulmer gone, Kiffin hired, Kiffin gone, Dooley hired!! We set ourselves up for failure and we sit here and complain and I am talking about the fanbase AND media!! Who would want to come to such a fickle fanbase?? What coach would say "That's Tennessee Football full of tradition and respect"!! We don't even respect what we have now and we are miles away from 2009

Derek Dooley has picked up this program and is showing progress every week!! He doesn't make all the right decisions and calls but it's a learning curve for him as well!! He had the balls to take this job when no other coach even wanted to touch it!!

I saw some competitive stuff last Saturday I haven't seen since 2004!! I saw a devastated locker room and that tells me we expected to win that game!! That's not been around here for a long, long time!! If we can go through the 80's and early 90's surely we can make it through this and give Coach Dooley time!!

1 or 2 more recruiting classes we will have the athletes Alabama, LSU, Florida and Georgia have...hell, we are competitive with what we got!!

Just had to get this off my chest!! I have watched this program for 35 years and I know 2008 through 2010 have got to be our worst years ever!! I saw the same growing pains in the mid 90's I am seeing now and that makes me smile and proud to be a Tennessee Vol!!

The last thing I would like to say is if we banned together and believed in and trusted where our football program is going....it would relieve some of the pressure that our media puts on our coaching staff and just maybe make it easier for our coaching staff to do their job!! GBO!!

Good post, sorry about pops.

He is looking down and smiling....I know he is there cuz he made me put $100 dollar bill in the lapel of his jacket in case he had to make a deal with St. Peter....lol, true story!!

He lived in Jax (1995 - 2002) on Losco drive and we spent many a Saturday watching the Vols there!!

If Dooley was signing Bamaesque talent I'd say it's worth continuing the experiment. He's not though. His best recruiting class was the one Lane served up for him. How many stud RBs did that moral victory against UGA get for us? The sooner we turn the page, the sooner things get fixed.

Location: REALITY

You sure? If we have it your way, it'll put us in the hole another 3-4 years. I know most that want Dooley fired now are living under the assumption that Gruden or some other "big name" coach will want the job. A little bit of a delusional take on things, and a little bit premature as well.

I do, however, feel that we will know by the end of this season whether Dooley is the right man for the job. Until then, It's best to let Hart deal with the decision making. All you "fans" who think your negativity spewing on a website is actually going to make a difference, well, that's delusional also.

I agree with your post. The problem we have as Vol fans, is even if Dooley has us 13-0 you will have some, say we should be winning games by 20 pts. I think Dooley is the answere for Tennessee. Saban could not have taken this mess Dooley took over and won with it. Your right there is a reason no one wanted the Tennessee job. They knew they would be under a bunch of crap for 3 or 4 years because of how this program was left. Now that Dooley has recruited some players we headed in the right direction you will have a bunch of coaches that want it now. After the work Dooley and his coaches have put in to get us turned around. I think Dooley is a good recruiter. He has brought in 4 star players and we were having a hard time. When you get the players like Alabama Dooley's coaching skills will go up. Never seen a donkey win the Kentucky Derby. We are getting the players now. I think this bunch of seniors are Kiffin's recruits. We still looking for that senior leadership.:hi:

Johnny Major's first 5 years were losing seasons. He had to build the program from the ground up. The A.D. gave him the time to do so. Also, there were probably no "Buyout" clauses in coaching contracts in 1976.
I think Dooley needs more time.
I also see that we are on the verge of the breakthrough that we all want.
the reason I say that is in 2010, had the ref's not blown the LSU & UNC games, our record would have been a respectable 8 - 5.
In 2011, had we not had a thin roster to begin with, then had three key injuries to Bray, Hunter & Lathers, we would have beaten Ky,. and split with UGA & USC.
For an 8 - 5 record and a bowl game. Remember, Worley was q.b., hunter was out, Rogers was double teamed, and Lathers was out. Our depth was poor.
In 2012, if we had DaRick Rogers in the Florida game, we would have been able to substitute more and would not have been worn our in the 4th quarter. Depth is an issue.
In the UGA game, if we had had more depth, we could have substituted for Hunter & Patterson more and not had so many dropped balls due to them being tired.
Let's get some more depth and see what happens with Dooley then.

If Dooley is fired, you do realize that no proven coach will come to U.T. and thus we will be starting over again with a new offensive and defensive philosophy and a new coaching staff top to bottom.
We tried to get proven coach's in 2009 & 2010 and it didn't work.
Gruden said "No" cowher said "No" lovie Smith said "No" Butch davis said "No' Muschamp said "No"
Brian Kelly said "No" T.C.U. coach said "No' Boise State coach said "No" Air Force coach said "No"
We got our tenth choice.....
Firing Dooley, only to replace him with another unproved, lower level college coach would not do any good. Where do we go from there? Do we hire the East Carolina coach? The Southern Miss coach? Do we hire the Temple coach? Do we hire Grambling's coach?
those are not upgrades!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This kills me if ......and.......but...... These words do not make winners. Ask Saban.

Hell of a post and the bold is the most important thing you said I believe.

Sorry about your dad, mine is getting on in years. I disagree with him about Majors....was glad to see him go. Never really liked him. He was my first UT coach, I came on board the same year he did (not as a player, as a fan) and just never liked him. Your OP is very good and well said!

Nice Post. I often wonder if a lot of the unrealistic expectations that are portrayed on here come from the younger fans who expect immediate results and haven't lived through the ups and downs of Tennessee football over the years.
