Question for the people with knowledge of training. How much improvement in speed is possible with the proper training? If we get a H.S, senior with 4.5 speed, how much faster can he become with the proper training? I realize it depemds on the athlete, but just a general estimation will do.

Well then, I'm sure he can drop it to 4.4. Maybe high 4.3. But like they say, you can't coach speed. You can train all you want, but some people are just faster than others

If you work hard, you can drop it to a 3.9

Humanly impossible!!

Like mentioned, speed can't be taught, you have it or you don't. Overall speed can be slightly improved by proper muscle development, but not by alot. What can be improved is coordination, explosion or acceleration, and lateral movement.
Adversly tho, speed can be hindered by too much weight training, and kids get bigger and stronger, but lose a step.

If you're concerned about 4.5 speed check this guy's history.

School: Kansas St.
Conference: Big 12
Ht., Wt.: 5-6, 187
40 Time: 4.5

Round 4, pick 29 (130 overall)

There are some things that can be improved on with proper training, others can't to any real degree as far as speed goes. You might be able to shave a little time off due to actually running faster but where most of the time is gained is by training muscles to react faster and more efficiently on the front end take off.

My unprofessional opinion was maybe half a tenth, but that was just a guess. A friend of mine is into drag racing, and he is more concerned with acceleration and reaction time than actual speed. In many aspects that seems to apply to sports also.

A legit 4.5 is fast enough to play any position on the field & is plenty fast. Anything faster than that is a lot of natural ability more than anything.

Yes.

Acceleration, balance and vision are whole lot more important than straight line speed.

Very few kids run as fast as their posted 40 times. Even at the combines the times are hand timed. 4.5 is plenty fast

Having coached speed I can honestly say it depends on what kind of training the kid has had. I ran a 4.53 my Sr. year and with speed drills, lifting, and form running I got down to 4.22. Proper running form plays a big role in speed. A lot of guys have the ability to be faster, its just a matter of how much can they correct and how committed are they to the extra work?

Really? Did you mean to type 4.32? Was it hand-clocked? I want proof!

So true. I remember reading that Jerry Rice's 40 time was only 4.5 maybe even 4.6. The difference was he ran just as fast in pads.

If you're referring to Devin Young then let me let you in on the BIG secret. He runs a 4.6 and HATES contact.

So, you drive from East Memphis to Knoxville every week to watch him play? If not, then SHUT UP. That's classless to rip a HS Senior before he even steps foot on campus.:bash:
