If Pruitt is fired then what??????

BYU, Coastal Carolina, Cincinnati and Iowa State. Bet whichever one we hired would end up worse than Pruitt and the one we pass on ends up at a rival school and finds immediate success

Mullen is represented by Sexton and did not turn down the UT job. The deadline for Currie to contact Mullen was on a Sat. by noon. Currie did not make the call. At 3:00 p.m. UF announced the Mullen hire. Next day UT announced the Schiano hire. Anyone capable of reading between the lines should know that Jim Haslem, (big money), is to blame for UT not hiring Dan Mullen. Haslem likes the idea of being in control and he can't dog Sexton around. Of course he didn't anticipate the fan reaction to the Schiano hire.

Inside politics between boosters and administration is the cause of UT's dysfunctional football program and has been for quite awhile. It's no secret either and the only big name or good coach we'll get to come here is one nearing retirement. A good coach isn't going to risk his future coming here other than one reason........a truckload of cash ! Enough to last him the rest of his life.
I sincerely doubt your story contains any truth except we attempted to hire Schiano. Someone always tries to blame Haslem’s when hires go bad. Get out of here with this nonsense.

Oh good, the "who you gunna git" line of thinking. Thinking if you don't hire Saban, Dabo, or Urban Meyer there's no point in it all. Yet there are GREAT coaches out there who can all be had for the right price. Matt Campbell is a #1 slam dunk hire. The guy is a flat out miracle worker. Everyone loves him - he's a great recruiter and coaches his players up to beat teams they shouldn't on a weekly basis. Made Iowa State respectable and has beaten Oklahoma several times when they were one of the top teams in the country.

Luke Fickell is a great coach who could do really good here with his coaching acumen and recruiting skills. I just like Campbell a bit better.

Freeze would crawl through flaming glass to get here and he would come cheaper than most. I still have reservations about him from a personal standpoint but he could coach circles around Gomer.

Jamey Chadwell is the flavor of the month but I've listened to this guy talk several times in radio interviews and he understands what he's doing. He would be a very, very nice hire here if we missed out on Campbell and Fickell. I would actually prefer Chadwell to Freeze. His attitude is great and all he needs is to surround himself with very good assistant coaches like what Shane Beamer is going to try to do at South Carolina. Chadwell would come in here next year and win 8 or 9 games with this roster.

So there's two home runs IMO in Campbell and Fickell and if you miss on those two the fallbacks are still LIGHT YEARS ahead of what we are dealing with now. Even if you want to go scorched earth and assume we miss on Chadwell and Freeze because they've taken other jobs by then there's still others that could be good here:

Doc Holliday - for 5 years to get things on track before he "rides off into the sunset" and retires. Great coach, heck of a recruiter. Wouldn't be a big splash but could definitely get the job done and the team would be well coached.

Billy Napier - the other flavor of the day besides Chadwell. I like Napier, just like Chadwell better.

Then I could reel off a list of a bunch of other coaches who should be able to easily outperform what Pruitt has done (which isn't hard when you think about it).

Just don't hire a hot assistant this time around. Get a guy with HEAD coaching experience that has proven to be able to turn bad teams around, or at the very least, take good teams and make them better or keep them good.

This whole who you gonna get crap is just that - crap. There's GREAT coaches to be had. We ain't got one of them. And even, even if you really thought from the bottom of your heart that there's no great coaches to go get you can't look at Gomer and say you want to see more of him. At that point just go get me a better coach than him AT THE VERY LEAST and show you care and are trying. Otherwise put dirt over Neyland, plant flowers, and make it a park. Because they sure won't be playing real big boy SEC football with Coach Gomer.

This. Matt Campbell or Hugh Freeze (depending on his interview) would be home run hires.

A friend once told me, “if you’re going to run with the big dogs, you better learn to p!$$ in high weeds.” UT has (absolutely HAS) to put together a REAL FINANCIAL package and go big-game hunting. In addition to the two above, I’d also kick the tires on Urban, B Stoops and Peterson and let it be known to all of the agents that UT is ready to play in the big leagues (maybe you get surprised by a successful coach). Highly unlikely, but I’d have the $$$ lined up and ask.

No more JV BS. Money talks and BS walks. Time to swing for the fences.
Lol, how do you know we didn't try that the last 3 times? Pretty sure we didn't get the ones we tried to get then, what makes you think it's different now?

If Pruitt is fired then what...?"

Then we conduct a nationwide coaching search. Administration will gauge a couple if big name interests (Stoops, Meyer) then start interviewing people who've had either success at small schools (Austin Peay) or success under a valid coach like was done with Pruitt. A couple of somewhat known names will be floated (like Schiano was) but less than 1% of the fan base will lose its collective mind with 99% of the criticism. Some "outstanding" prospect with assistant coach/coordinator experience from a lesser school (Indiana, Coastal Carolina) will be hired. He'll have a press conference and say things like "aight" and the fan base will extol his virtues.

"It'll take 'em a couple of years but I feel real good about this 'un."

Then he'll lose and the fan base will scream and cry until he's gone, solidifying again why Stoops and Meyer wouldn't even consider living in Knoxville.

Because we know that they weren't going to pay more than $4.4 million for a coach with head coaching experience based off the Schiano contract details.

$4.4 million wasn't getting Mullen, or any other top coach; hire on the cheap, Pruitt for $3.6 million, and we got exactly what we paid for.

Surely we would have someone lined up. We don’t want or need another public search.

Just remember what happened when we fired Donnie Tyndal. Rick Barnes was secured FIRST.
We were blessed with timing and connections there. Texas fires Barnes and Dave Hart had a strong relationship with him already.

Bob Stoops. The retired HC at Oklahoma ? Where was he a head coach prior to taking the Oklahoma job? Where was Mark Richt a HC prior to taking the UGA job ?

Uhhh....Stoops was assistant head coach at FL prior to Oklahoma.

Won a national title in year 2 after taking over a .500 program.

If you actually have a point you failed to make it with all the questions.

Hugh Freeze has baggage? What baggage? Who cares? Do we want a real coach or a choir boy? ..and since when are we above hiring someone "like Freeze?" Who the hell do we think we are? Okay..let's be perennial SEC doormats...but at least we'll have the moral satisfaction of having a goody goody coach. BS.

The SS Pruitt started taking on water after the Kentucky beat down. We should already know who is interested (Freeze) and could get this lined up. But I would not fire Pruitt without a coach in hand. That is possible this year with so few openings. Last time, Mullen kept us at bay until he talked to Florida.

I am just as frustrated, we’ll make that just apathetic toward the program just to the point where I don’t care. Used to love reading articles about the team and looking up stats and coming on here to the boards to complain after losses and revel in all the wins.

Now it’s just not even watching the games, just looking to see how bad they are losing. If Pruitt loses and he is fired on that Sunday what are you as fans expecting to happen? Who is going to come and right the ship? Freze?? Your holding the future of your program on that guy? Some great offensive mind who’s team scores 45 points in the MAC or ACC? Another defensive coordinator from bama, Clemson (venebles) or Ohio st? There are NO SPLASH hires folks. Saban, Dabo and gruden are NOT going to come here and are the only sure thing hires? Wouldn’t you rather wait to get a really good guy that would maybe excite the base and recruits.

Please someone tell me who is a GREAT hire and would actually come here that we should get rid of our coach regardless of if we win the next two or lose them...
I do not think Pruitt will be fired. But a lot of coaches will. To start with the QB coach (wenkie) then the O-line coach (Friend) Then the Defense cord. and hire a good D-line coach. Let Tee (if he stays) help with the offense.

Some of us need to wake the hell up! While I love the Vols. You are kidding yourself if you think there is a line of ELITE PROVEN HC's wanting to come here. That is how you end up with some of the coaches we have had in the past. Before some fool says we are cheap, if you look at the total spent on the entire football coaching staff we have spent a ton of money. Fulmer has given Pruitt everything he has asked for in regards to money for his staff. The crazy coaching searches we had in the recent past is part of the problem. Not to mention the win now or else you will get fired attitude we have. I get the anger and disappointment of this season. The vast majority on here were optimistic when we were 2-0. This is the same team and staff. We have made a lot of mistakes in games and it has cost us the win. I am not happy with the way this season has gone. It sucks but I also don't think Fulmer, Pruitt or the team is happy with it either. I am ready for this season to be over and pray next year is more normal. 2020 has sucked. But, AGAIN Fulmer has said Pruitt is NOT getting fired after this season. To keep up this fire him or who will be our coach next year is just insane. It is not going to happen. GO VOLS

Here's the deal. Tennessee should have a coach they want on the hook and ready before they fire cornbread. We can't continue to fire then start the search.

Go talk to freeze, Campbell, and others to lock one up. Then fire cornbread

ummmm....we go through a coaching search, Gruden sightings show up in Knoxville, we try to land Freeze, but he backs out in the last minute for one of our rivals, we then turn to Ok. State coach who gets another raise at his school, we then find some random person no one knows to hire....I then say we would never hire that guy....then I eat crow a few days later when we do....

At least that is the pattern....

Beyond that......Sexton had him, (Mullen), on hold the entire week. Haslem simply wanted Schiano and I don't know why Currie attempted to oblige the man. Threatening to pull his boosting ? Your guess is as good as mine.
currie wanted mullens!! mullens was wanting the florida job and the minute chip kelly went to ucla - mullens held out long enough to get the job at florida haslam had nothing to do with it

There are plenty of head coaches with successful experience. Make a list and write blank checks with your top 3 coaches names in each...someone will take it..
