If Knowles system takes a few years this tells me

Everybody had us going 8-4 in the summer. If anything we overachieved this year. Fans thinking it was a disappointing season are delusional.
Our preseason over/under wins was 8.5 at most of the betting places, so most people outside the Vol fandom bubble figured us for 8-9 wins.

Have not seen any comment from Heuple if Knowles will be the DC in the bowl game. Obviously he cannot run his system but he could manage the D and call blitzes and things like that. Maybe its too early for him get involved.
Since Illinois is in the B1G with Penn State, I'm sure Knowles has at least taken a long look at their offense, even though they weren't on the PSU schedule this year. He'll probably have some insights for preparation.

Whether he'll have enough time to know which players can execute pressure well in specific situations might be the issue with him calling the D in the bowl.

It does no good to dial up "the right play" if your DB can't actually execute that play well because his skill set is limited or if bringing pressure leaves another guy on an island he lacks the skills to defend.

If UT had Penn State's defensive ranking in 2025 - who do we beat?

IMHO...

Georgia - yes
Alabama - no
Vandy - yes

UT is sitting at home with a bye about to play in a bowl match-up with a 1st round winner.

...this tells me he's gonna LOVE working with smart, disciplined players with great position room study habits who take pride in their cognitive abilities.

That’s is true, but the 8-4 was because the offense was predicted to take a step back. If we knew last summer the offense would be first in the SEC, I would have predicted 11-1. I think that is why people were disappointed with 8-4 with that offense and the defense expectations from 2024.

Absolutely. 100%. There's no reason Coach Knowles gets asked about the complexity of his defense while other coaches don't. You're right. It's all just BS the media makes up. 🙄
Once it's out there they all take off and run with it. Suddenly every media outlet and YouTuber is regurgitating the same talking points. It's what they do.

BTW, did you know that Erik Ainge is Danny Ainge's nephew?

The original plan for 2026 was most likely going to be a transition year anyway per the most likely blueprint-moving from Nico to whoever won the job next.

Nicos antics in April just kinda messed up the plan for 2025 a bit

Our schedule next season is BRUTAL anyway. Breaking in a first year starter most likely.

If we hit 8-4 next season I am not gonna whine very much.

2027 better be big though

Depends more on skill level and depth available that first year. The complexity of the defense is more of an issue for the offense to know who is going to be where imo. Each player still just has one job on each play. Learn your job.
Hopefully Knowles being on the sideline means less presnap confusion when we are looking to the sideline for the signals for the call from the booth just prior to the ball being snapped

The real MVP this year was whoever scheduled the UGA game in September. If we had played them in November they would have beat us by 20. We need to insist on playing them early from now on.

That's funny. Coach Knowles HIMSELF buys that his defense is complex and harder to implement than most but I'm glad you know more about it than him.

You read the article? Nowhere in it does Knowles talk about his defense other than to say the players were learning at rapid pace and it all depended on how quickly they picked things up and there will always be a need for improvements.

Yeah, I read it and he's aware and his players are aware it's more complex than most Ds and say so. Specifically, that it requires more decisions and more thinking and more responsibility for the DBs.

It's harder to pick up because he has a lot of options so that he can disguise the D and adapt based upon the situation. It's a good thing but it's not as easy as most defenses to learn for that reason.
