Everybody had us going 8-4 in the summer. If anything we overachieved this year. Fans thinking it was a disappointing season are delusional. That Heupel isnt feeling pressured to "win now" after a disappointing season and growing concern. This isnt meant to be a criticism. I'm not saying he should or shouldn't feel it. He's just not putting pressure on himself to win big next year, nor does it tell me that he feels pressur from Danny. Ive always wondered myself how long Danny would stick around, so he maybe feels confident in how things will be in say 3 years. There's always the situation where a new AD doesnt have that certian level of loyalty to an old coach. Idk maybe I'm looking too deep into this but it just appears to me he is looking more long term and doing what needs to be done (including possibly firing more coaches), even if it means another set back in 6.
Yeah, the old days where a coach has a good recruiting class and by their senior year they gel into a winning program....those days are gone for the most part. All I've seen on X ( formerly known as Twitter ) is Vol players on both offense and defense who are leaving for the NFL or entering the portal. Many won't even play in the bowl game.. I miss the old days when players had some connection to the school and would stay around for 3 years or so.The reality is that with the portal and NIL, he’s going to have to get his system to a point where it can be implemented quicker. He’s going to have meaningful, impact transfers and freshmen every year. If they can’t pick it up, he’s doomed. College football rosters are so fluid year to year that he has to make it take root each spring and early fall. A lot of guys aren’t staying 3-4 years at the same program.
I keep hearing that his system takes a while to catch on, I am not so sure. It looks like to me that may have been the case early in his career, but looks like he adjusted as he went and his defenses just kept getting better, not that he was slowly implementing his system. Looks like Ohio state caught on quickly. May have taken a step back at penn state, but that could be a product of the team just sucked so bad they got their coach fired. Just saying, it may be that he improved his system, not that the players were too dumb to catch on.That Heupel isnt feeling pressured to "win now" after a disappointing season and growing concern. Why worry about things you can't control? It will be what it will be. That's funny. Coach Knowles HIMSELF buys that his defense is complex and harder to implement than most but I'm glad you know more about it than him.I don’t buy it. You have a whole year to learn. Players can’t be that stupid.
What I like about Knowles is that based upon what I have seen of his defenses, he seems to have aggressive instincts in critical moments as opposed to having a chronic fear of the big play. On defense you need to mix up your looks and you can't always blitz anymore than you don't, however I prefer guys who, when the chips are down, they aren't afraid to gamble. That's Kirby’s MO and in my opinion it's what you want. You may get beat sometimes but at least you go down swinging. Banks did not have that mindset, having someone who does is an immediate upgrade.I think the narrative that it takes so much time is overblown. OSU weren't world beaters on defense in 2022, but they were noticeably better than the year before. We just fielded an atrocious defense this year. I have little doubt that we'll be far better next year, even if we aren't quite the 1939 squad come again yet.
Not really, every year the Top 10 most talented teams have many failures among them. Talent helps but is no guarantee of success. Look at the Top 10 in Talent on this year's Team Talent Composite. There are several teams there that are downright bad. Only 5 playoff teams. Good coaching matters. It still comes down to players. If we consistently recruit at a very high/elite level, we are going to win a lot of ball games.Regardless of who our defensive coordinator is.

Are there exceptions? Yes. But the exception to the rule doesnt make it the rule. Year in and year out, the teams with the most talent, on AVERAGE, are the ones who see the most success. Not really, every year the Top 10 most talented teams have many failures among them. I have no evidence of this but I feel like they are going to hit the portal hard on defense. I think they might be throwing all in and would be in line with the moves the program is making. Might even see Heupel change the offense again to better compliment the defense. That Heupel isnt feeling pressured to "win now" after a disappointing season and growing concern. Looks like Penn State had talent. Does that mean they had a bad head coach? OC? DC?Not really, every year the Top 10 most talented teams have many failures among them. Year in, year out about half of the top 10 most talented teams have 4 or 5 losses or more. The ones who don't always seem to be mostly the same ones, the ones with the good coaches. I agree talent helps but good coaching is also needed. Just because you have a Top 10 roster doesn't by any means guarantee success. Are there exceptions? Yes.
