I'd play George MacIntyre

What SR QB would transfer here if he thought as soon as you lose 2 games you're getting benched.
I'm so glad half this board makes zero football decisions. Most of the coaches would be fired after 1st quarter plays.
What recruit wants to come play for a coach who throws in the towel after the fans think the season is over.
If you're not playing the best guys, players know this and they'll leave. Most of the football IQ in these forums is non-existent and comes from having never played a sport

You realize we don’t have to worry about what other QB recruits think. We have 2 guys on the roster with 3+ years of eligibilityleft and another 5 star who’s deeply committed to Heupel. Why would we worry what a Senior QB in the portal thinks if we are able to find our future QB who’s on the roster right now?

We don’t know if we need a transfer QB to come here. That’s the point. We need to see what we have in Merk and Gmac. I’m sorry but Aguilar is getting 7 figures here. He’s hardly a victim if Heupel wants to start playing for 2026.

Players play for the schools they play for based on money and money alone. Let’s stop acting like that’s not the #1 factor.

It’s widely believed Merk is gonna transfer out because of a crowded QB room? Why? Because he likely won’t get a shot to see if he serviceable or not. Seems like an easy way to do that now that the season is over and 4 games in 8 weeks left.

It’s a business.

I’d like to see GMac as well, but that’s not happening. Against the rules to plan that far into the future.
Nobody should worry or plan on having any kids for more than 2 or 3 years at key specialty positions. Play them while you have them if they can help win, period. All I've heard is how good he was, just a little skinny. So what if he is skinny, if he is smart and tough he will be fine.

Just because they are here now doesn't mean they are next year. You play 2025 season out. Each year is a new year. Faison may not start next year, hope he doesn't unless he's all American which is extremely rare. We may hit the portal for a vet QB to bridge to Faison or Jake or George may start, or may leave. Point is, you try and win every game in 2025. Don't worry about 2026 until it gets here. Hell half the team may portal next year. No one knows. This isn't pro football

Merk is widely believed to transfer out this offseason. Why is that? Because it will be a crowded QB room and he hasn’t had a shot to show if he can be the guy or not. If only there was a chance for Heupel to see what he has in the two quarterbacks on the roster now that have a chance to be here next year. But sure, we have so much to play for in this remaining season that will far outweigh the longer term health of the program at the most important position on the field.

I'm sure the comments from.you and others on this board would be,well at least we saw what we had in Merk if we went to the swamp and got beat and lost to Vandy due to QB play, right?
I trust the guy who played at this level, won a championship, and knows how a locker room works over "play for next year".
Merk couldn't beat out Joey. Why should he get to play over the obvious better guy? You think receivers would be ok? Anyone? This is my opinion but I highly doubt it.
You have your opinion but I seriously doubt Coach is considering giving a look at another QB. Just doesn't make sense

8-4/9-3 with Aguilar is equal to 7-5/8-4 with Merk-Gmac.

The last thing Heupel can afford is to roll into 2026 with an unproven QB…. I can stomach winning 7-8 games this year with one of the younger guys because we saw how not doing that in 2023 resulted in the Nico situation.

We’ve literally seen this story before with Milton and Nico.

As far as the receivers, 2 of our top 3 receivers will be here next year. You think they are going to complain about getting game reps with a QB who will be here next year and likely starting? Stop the idiocy.

There is nothing meaningful left to play for. So if this season is gonna be a dud, I’d rather roll into the offseason with momentum at QB with the guys competing for the starting job having actual game experience.

You have to be a delusional clown to think actual game experience and film isn’t a bigger asset than starting reps in spring practice and the orange and white game.

some free suggestions:

Work in a few tackling drills for offensive players to stop pick-sixes.

Give Gmac a series or 2 vs. New Mexico State.

Add some new maxims to the General’s 100 year old list.

give backup kickers more attention. Let Max try out as a holder or onside kick specialist.

If you think 9-3 is equal 8-4 you're the delusional clown.
No Coach in their right mind is going to bench their starting QB who is at or near the top of every passing category over a 2nd string guy just to get a look.
Your lack of football IQ shows. You think all the players would be ok if the better guy is riding the bench? No. You obviously never played the game.
Here's what we'll do. We'll watch and see what the coach does. Each year is it's own year. Who cares about 2026. You win every possible game you can in 2025.
You would rather roll into a season going, well we got beat in the swamp and at Vandy but at least we gave Merk a look. No. Just dumb. The players would have a serious problem with that, and the fans. Go win every game.
Lunacy

I look forward to your excuse making if the QB play is substandard in 2026 which leads to Heupel having a warm seat. Because that is what this is setting up to be.

Newsflash, this roster is 2/3’s underclassmen. If you think the majority of the team is gonna have an issue with Heupel giving the younger guys a shot and playing for the future, you aren’t dealing in reality.

I'll worry about 2026 when it comes.
Dude, you e never played. It's obvious. Yes, players will have a big problem letting guys not as good get a shot. A seriously big problem. They see it each day in practice.
Merk has played some this year. Hell get some play in 2 weeks. No way should he get any meaningful snaps at the swamp unless JA is hurt. He's a red shirt freshman. You think he'll go to the swamp and play lights out. We've done that before and it was a train wreck.
Joey deserves the right to start and play. Coaches and players know that.
Again, I'll worry about 2026 in 2026

Merk has a 7 figure NIL deal. Gmac is rumored to be around $750k.
There is a reason for that and that is because they are hopefully the future of the program.

The season is over and Aguilar was a $1.2m one year rental QB. He played great in a tough situation given how his year started. But Heupel has to focus on the long term health of the program. Rolling in 2026 with a starting QB with no experience is a recipe for disaster.

We have literally started freshmen all over the field this year. Heupel made the mistake not turning to Nico in 2023 once the season was lost with the lost to Bama. He’ll do it again this year the season lost last night.

I’m sure people will value the guys who are the future at QB not getting meaningful time in meaningless games just so Aguilar can finish out the season. Will mean a lot to folks in 2026 if our QB play is mid tier. “At least we can be proud that we went 9-3 or 8-4 with Aguilar last year and got to compete in the Mayo Bowl”

So... everyone can have a bad game and keep starting but not Joey?
Agree. Benching Joey may be one of the most ridiculous ideas I’ve ever seen on Volnation. JA is leading the SEC in passing and let’s bench him? IF we win out plus the bowl game we’d finish 10-3….10-3! JA gives us the best chance to do just that.

9-3 gets us what exactly? Nothing of relevance.

Starting freshmen all over the field is exponentially different than starting a freshman at QB.
Florida is good. So is Vandy. It will take a great game for us to win. Merk had his chance this year, with a year ahead of Joey in the system and didn't beat him out but you wanna trot him out to see what exactly?
This isn't the pros. Each year is a new year. Go win every game

I’m not really sure what to think about next year’s QB situation.

Hooker and Milton weren’t his players.

Nico ended up being terrible. Hard to evaluate on that one, given just one season.

Based on what little we’ve seen from the backups (in which they’ve had opportunities to play, but he kept Joey in). It hasn’t been all that promising.

You know he isn’t going to start a freshman QB in this system, or he would have this year and not hit the portal. He had such little faith that he hits the portal and hoped a guy learns the system in four months over guys that have been here for a year or more.

Sorry, just saw the

I'd play George MacIntyre thread.
