I Surrender

There needs to be some rules and regulations put into place, but overall I love NIL and the portal. Athletes have the right to make some money. They also have the right to decide each year where they want to be. Nothing wrong with either.

What you're seeing now is the initial rush.

I feel in 3 to 4 years things will settle down, some needed regulation and rules will be passed, and things will even put.

This is sort of like the California gold rush. It's gonna be crazy for awhile before it gets better.

News flash: this stuff was already happening, it’s just legal now.

If you didn’t care before, don’t pretend to care now.

It wasn’t going on at THIS level though. Never before was it possible for HS SRs to make $300k in their final year. This new system is a far, far cry from slipping players a few Gs or getting them a car. So it’s totally different now and there has to be some kind of oversight or something.

Maybe. But look at it this way. It could get much worse. California used to be the only state that allowed NIL deals to HS kinds. Now Louisiana is doing it. I suspect that trend to keep gaining steam. It could be that every state allows it within 5 years. This has the potential to be really bad without some serious restrictions being put in place.

NIL is a death nail....... just not instantly. I understand change but to me it's like a tire.... you can only make a tire so round, eventually you just have to leave it alone

There are going to have to be some adjustments somewhere. Wait until some of the kids realize they are going to have to pay income taxes, or when some don't pay and they have IRS problems.
That's what Spyre is for. Not just land the deal, but help them along the way.

While beneficial for our schedule next year, the Jordan Addison thing at Pitt seriously gives me cause for concern. Yikes.

I mean USC can straight up reach out to a player on another team and say “Huge NIL deal for you if you transfer to us”

That’s shady and dirty no matter how you spin it.
Why? Get the money while you can get it. No nfl team is gonna show you loyalty. They’ll use you up and spit you out like gum.

What you said was damnably demonstrated with NFL's concussion policy regarding on field sustained brain damage compensation. And this is only one example of the use and spit you out reality. I think CFB players don't really have protection in this area. So take the money you can get and pocket it, nobody is going to look out for you afterwards, so look out for yourself when opportunity presents itself. Long live capitalism.

do these college athletes get to hire an agent/lawyer to handle deals and negotiate with schools, big booster $$ groups etc?
If these NIL deals result in more wins, championships, prize recruits - then many fans will accept it.
Who said "Greed is Good"?

Alabama sent 250k to Albert Means in the 1990s. SMU was spending 6 figures on almost every player on the team in the 80s. There's always been big money in this.

I don't care how much players make or if they get a free transfer. If this size of NiL deals make money for people on both sides, they will continue. If the people funding them don't see a return on their investment, it won't continue at this level. If Nico comes in and lights it up, and we win a lot, his deal will be cheap at that point. A loaded Vols team that's in the top 10 makes about a extra 100+ million dollars in economic impact in Knoxville alone. That's why it makes sense for businesses to pay into the NiL collective. The player appearances are just a side benefit.

Look at Juwuan James. Working out offsite due to COVID and gets hurt and the Broncos screw him and cut him.

I agree with the above statement 100%. Reality is going to slap a lot of these young men in the face when the IRS shows up wanting their cut. Oh, you don't have it.....too bad, F you, pay me........I believe this whole NIL situation is going to get extremely ugly over the next few years.

I understand the point you’re making, but I’m not really sure how it fits as a reply to my comment. I was saying that was shady on USC’s part to reach out to a player on another team’s roster.

There’s gotta be intervention and regulation at some point, right?

I dont think the NCAA or what ever survives can put a cap on what players can make but I do beleive they can restrict the ability of players to transfer & be eligible for competition if the organization chooses to. Transfer waiver was put in in order to apease the players (and media) to allow players to move freely separate and apart from NIL.Transfer waiver was not addressed in the SCOTUS ruling. Every sport authority organization controls their definition of "who is eligible for competition."

Now that its become "open season" with organizations (schools) out offering unlimited money to buy players, the competitive balance will get grossly out of line. I would not be surprised to see a 1 year residence requirement for transfers to be eligible to play return. This wouldnt inhibit a player from getting paid but it would inhibit him from immediately being eligible to play which would slow greatly the transfer to the "highest bidder" process. A similar type restriction exists in private business called "non-compete" agreements and while they can be beat in court on occasion, the SCOTUS hasnt made them unconstitutional.

In the long run, schools will need help from a governing body to get some handle on this. The current environment is not sustainable.

I still say the final "fig leaf" to fall will be the delusion that these players are actually student athletes. I think what will eventually happen is these players will be categorized as university employees instead of students and the academic requirements to be eligible to play will go away completely. You're not going to convince a kid who has a million dollars in his bank account to attend a 7:30am civics class.

I want to say at the outset that this is not a complaint about fairness. this isn't about winning or losing. This isn't about thinking that my school is now at an advantage or disadvantage.

I foresee a future where sometimes they're on top and sometimes they're not. And I'm ok with that. That's the way it's always been.

But, this NIL stuff. I surrender. The joy I had watching college football.....and I will still watch.....and I will still cheer......I'm not going to be one of those people who says they're through and you know damn well they're still watching. I'll be watching.

But, it's never going to be the same. And it sucks. It truly does.

It will not bring me the same level of joy it once did.

But, as you follow recruiting and the portal, it is utter madness. And one can say it's always been the case with recruits and money, but that's hogwash. It's never been close to this.

You've got portal numbers of anywhere from 10-20 players and recruiting classes of 20-25. Half the roster will be at the school for a year. You can't even get excited about recruiting because no one knows if the player is willing to wait two years to see the field.

It will never, ever be the same. Everyone will adapt because that's what you have to do to survive.

But, this isn't good.
Did you spew this nonsense on the gator board 🙄

Whatever you say, oh infallible one. Whatever you say. As we all know, truth is irrelevant when it comes to capitalism. Individuals aren't capitalism, rather it is a system of exploitation, which is why unions either are, or attempted to be formed. But whatever you say, oh, great one.

Not saying all are are trash but my dad paid his dues and was a member of the UFCW Union for 30 years, his only job till he passed. But they Weiseled there way out of paying anything out when he passed through a loophole. He and my mother divorced Not even a year earlier and he hadn't changed his beneficiary from her and they voided his entire file and paid absolutely nothing. So that group that was formed to protect employees like my father are just as low down and greedy.
My point is nothing is ever going to be perfect, I guess we just have to deal with it.

Sometimes, even bad things create good results. Gila monster venom, for example, is used to make Byetta, a drug that is very helpful for people with Type 2 diabetes. The plant, Belladonna (deadly nightshade) is used for treating arthritis pain, colds, hay fever, bronchospasms caused by asthma, whooping cough, hemorrhoids, nerve problems, Parkinson's disease, colic, irritable bowel syndrome, and motion sickness. So, it's no shocking surprise that capitalism can have some positive effects too. The real issue is people who refuse or just can't see its adverse effects as well. The truth is ready when you are, assuming you will ever be ready to accept it.
Never said capitalism is perfect. I can see the "adverse effects". But it's far better than socialism or communism. What system do you think produces better outcomes for most people? Are you capable of seeing the issues with socialism or communism, which you seem to espouse?

It’s a whole lot tougher to follow recruiting and keep up with rosters constantly evolving. Just tune in each fall, grab you a guide and see who appears on the field for us and enjoy the games.

My suggestion is for you to take your political hysteria over to the politics forum. As I was advised not that long ago, this is the football forum. Hope you understand that, but if not, do continue.

How can some people come on here and complain about NIL when it (along with the transfer portal) has flat out allowed Tennessee an unbelievable opportunity to catch up to the powerhouses. This past decade has been the worst in college football history in terms of viewership etc. and it is because of the Saban effect. Nick Saban has stockpile talent simply by promising recruits (and using statistics to back it up) that they have the best chance to earn money by going to Bama. That’s what his entire recruiting pitch consists of and it works (obviously). A few years ago it looked like nothing would ever change the current landscape. But now along comes the transfer portal NIL. Suddenly, schools like Tennessee have an opportunity to make a counter to Saban’s pitch and effectively offer kids an opportunity to make money right now without having to wait on NFL money. It is a game changer. And it’s what’s allowing us to land kids like Nico. It’s great for the kids, great for historically good programs like Tennessee trying to get back to the top but facing a huge talent disparity compared to schools like bama, and it’s great for college football in general

You know, your post is pretty accurate (though more "Saban-centric" than I have ever worried about). My issue is that, I think the across the board result of NIL and the free-for-all portal is bound to be the end of college football as I remember and loved it. It will be professional minor league football and, to me, that is a shame. I'll probably not care very much going forward because no one will be able to convince me that any of the players care at all - except for their own deals.

Next they'll change the wall sign from "I will give my all for Tennessee today" to "I will put in my time for my check today." Big difference.
