I still don't understand all the animosity toward Butch Jones

He went from most fans buying his BS (remember the brick by brick commercial, etc.) to being hated and fired in a pretty short time. He was the "jilted lover" and no doubt tried to stick it to UT. It worked. Some fans, as proof in this thread, are still upset.

So, he was a con artist at worst, a man who achieved his own Peter Principle at best, and reacted by lashing out and “sticking it” to the fanbase.

I think we are in agreement that he brought this dislike on himself. The only “revenge” the UT fanbase has is the knowledge that he must realize he was a failure, and has become a lapdog to the best coach in the business.

What a way to close out a career.

He basically told PM that he wouldn’t have him as a QB coach.

“We talk all the time,” Jones said of Manning, “and I think anything Peyton Manning does, he’ll be successful. But coaching is a completely different animal than playing, as any great player would tell you.

“But, again, I welcome him any time he wants to come in to Tennessee and spend time with our players. He’s been great that way. He’s been very willing to do that. We’ve been very fortunate and blessed to have him be a part of our teams, coming in and speaking to (them), and this year will be the same.”

Peyton Manning interested in coaching at Tennessee? Butch Jones chimes in

For as bad as football coach as he was, he was an even worse person and a fraud. He's one of the true people that I look and legitimately wonder how he has made so much money and advanced places in life. He is nothing more than a glorified wide receivers coach.

But, hey, he got paid. The joke is on us.

Go ahead and shoot me, but I just don't get it.
Yes, Butch was in over his head. Yes, his in-game decisions were often bad. And yes, his decisions lost us a few big games.
But ... But ... But he also got us back into the spotlight. We were ranked in the Top 10 and beat Georgia and Florida in 2016. Then 2017 happened and people forgot all that came before. I was glad to see Butch go, but I have no animosity toward the guy. He was just a transition guy. So why does everyone seem to despise him so much?
You serious Clark? Didn't even read the comments. Don't care. 2015 and 16 teams were national title contenders but unfortunately their coaching staff were dumber than a box of rocks.

CBJ's craptastical seasons had a portion of the fans on VN calling anyone a "nega-vol" that didn't agree with Jones and/or his staff after the games. Good times.

At best, he's a brown stain on the UT mattress. Time to throw it out and finally burn it.

I have a cousin (a Kentucky fan) in Northern KY, across the river from Cincy. He did a lot of promotional work with the UC sports programs. He called me the day we hired Butch asking what we were thinking. The man was universally disliked and thought of as a clown in Cincinnati. They were THRILLED to get rid of him, but were stunned that he conned his way into an SEC blueblood program.

Thanksgivings have sucked ever since.

I was most concerned about Butch when he was at his "best". He had some recruiting "momentum" in 2014 and was making 2.95 million per year. If you remember, he couldn't wait to get to the bargaining table. He was coming off a 6-6 season and before the season was even over, he and his agent were lobbying for a raise and extension. His raise was 3.6 million base through 2020. I remember thinking, why on earth would a coach that expects to win championships lock himself into 3.6 million for the next 6 years. The answer was simple from Butch Jones perspective...he knew he was overachieving. He knew he was never going to compete with big boys in the SEC for any sustained period. He knew he was going to be exposed soon. He knew this was the most he was going to make and best he was ever going to do. He knew to lock in the best salary at that point for the longest period of time possible. He knew in 2014 that he was never going to win anything here. He knew that it was just a matter of time before his dog and pony show got exposed. Josh Dobbs delayed the inevitable a little bit, but even he couldn't hide Butch Jones ineptitude for long. I don't have hard feelings towards Butch because he failed. I have hard feelings for him because he purposely hurt UT for his own gain and continues to do so.

I would think that, as a UT fan, Thanksgivings with a UK fan would be very tolerable, overall.

Tennessee leads the series 81–25–9.
They've won 6 times in my lifetime (born in 1973). That's got to be similar for you Boro ... you're not that old (lol).
In 2018, we beat the best team in the history of their program with a first year coach and a team that didn't even make a bowl game ... and it wasn't even close.
Shoot, we're even making the basketball games with them interesting now.
Maybe Stoops will get them over the hump ... soon.
Boro ... I love you man.

The problem with the 2016 argument is that Butch had a LOADED squad that year. Anyone would have gotten in the Top 10 with that team (and wouldn’t have needed a Hail Mary against 8-5 UGA to do it).

That team should have won a minimum of 10 games, and strutted into the SEC Champ game.
Bingo!
....... but those pesky Commodores led by Derek Mason got in the way.

Born in 70....so yes, for the most part, outside of the last 8 or so years it’s been tolerable. As you know Kentucky fans believe they are perennially about to break through and compete at the highest levels. So those wins over the last few years, along with our, more frequently than not, dismal record....have made my maternal side of the family fairly uppity. I have 7 cousins who are UK grads. 1 was a cheerleader, and her husband was a multi-year starter at point guard for the Cats in the 80’s. When they are competitive they are insufferable, even in a loss. It’s why I’d rather beat Kentucky than just about anyone on the schedule.

Not retaining Chaney and Pittman when they wanted to stay.
Squandering the 2016 season with bad coaching decisions.
Being willfully incapable of seeing Alvin Kamara's talent.
Telling Trevor Lawrence to go kick rocks.
Don Mahoney as an oline coach.
"Champions of life"

That's just off the top of my head, give me a few minutes and I'm sure the rest of that debacle will come back after I unblock it from my memory.
1st and inches, vs Florida, at The Swamp,, let's take out our best RB, and try to pass!!! What could go wrong?!
2015, 3rd and three, same place, same team, let's play it safe, and roll Josh out, and he can just step out of bounds!!!! Stopping the damn clock!! Surely Florida can't drive the length of the field in less than 2 mins!!

Get my gun, honey! :p

I had honestly hoped it had been long enough, we wouldn't see another "Butch" thread. I've said my peace, I'll move along now. GBO!!
