I have a question about Casey Clausen...

The stubbornness of Fulmer to force fit Rick Clausen into a sharing QB role in 2005 was that years downfall. It started in the opening game against UAB. Ainge started and zipped us down the field first two drives for two scores and a 10-0 lead. Clausen then came in for his turn and we sputtered from then on, eeking out a 17-10 win. South Carolina game was the worst. Defense kept giving us the ball well inside USCe territory and Clausen led us to negative yardage and no points. I still believe had Ainge just been declared the rock solid starter from the beginning, we are a 10-2 season.
Phil did that in hopes of getting Jimmy Clausen to come play at UT.

The majority of the players on the roster that year (2005) felt Rick did not get a fair shot to be the QB in spring and fall camp. They thought he should have been the QB because of how he finished 2004. Many team leaders supported Rick. Fulmer was trying to bring the team together by letting both play and it just didn't work. Ended up with pressure on both QBs which affected their performance. If the players had been behind Ainge, there would have been no issues.

Fulmer thought he could get Jimmy no matter how he handled Rick.

Bro your vol card should be suspended for this comment. How can your recollection of this game not be better than this. Lol. It was rick clause. That was the lsu game that was in the aftermath of Katrina. We totally shattered an entire region of the country's only hope when ice man's little brother came off the bench to lead a furious second half comeback. The underhanded pick six at the end of the first half ended ainge's night. Fulmer was absolutely in love with ainge and continued to bench clausen for him throughout the remainder of the season. That might've had something to do with jimmy clausen not giving us a serious look.

This isn't my recollection. I lived in Gibbs from 03-05 and the players seemed to like Ainge and Schaffer a lot more. A lot of the guys that had played with Casey graduated/left the same year he did. Rick sat alone at Varsity cafeteria and lived in the Clausen Condo down on the river, away from the rest of the guys. At least until the crazy night when Schaffer had his run-in with the basketball players. It didn't surprise me much. He flipped out on us once when we hit his buddy's car with a water balloon from the third floor. Believe it or not, three future high draft picks from the baseball team were in on it with is.

Or mine either. I knew quite a few of the guys on the team during that time, and most of them (if not all of them) supported Ainge. I stand by my first statement that Phil played Rick in hopes of getting Jimmy on the team.

Les was the coach then. Monday nite football game in Baton Rouge. But yes, Rick had a score to settle with the Tigers.
I'm sure he didn't forget Saban and LSU though. Saban didn't think he was good enough to be an SEC quarterback.

You are 100 percent correct... though I also remember no one seeming to think we would get Jimmy. I'm not even sure he came for an official visit. I also seem to remember talking with OG Rob Smith about it at the time (he was really plugged into the school's recruiting efforts). He told me early on the word was Jimmy would be going to South Bend.

Rick Clausen at LSU. He came in for Ainge and led the come back. Then he acted all butt hurt in the post game TV interview.

Well his former coach and team said he wasn’t a SEC Caliber QB and he led a 21-0 comeback for the win so i don’t blame him.

He also was the QB who played good enough to win in the SEC title game vs Auburn before the Tigers got phantom flags and calls. I will never forget the long TD pass Campbell threw when our players jumped offsides and made contact with the center and they didn’t blow the play dead.

Like most TN QBs Casey was under appreciated. I like him a lot and thought he played well for us even while injured.
We have Payton we compare everyone to, and it is not fair to them.

That was Les' first game. I remember he tried to use a sad boy band boom mic and earpiece instead of noise cancelling headphones in the middle of 90k screaming Cajuns.

There was no stubbornness. Both QB's sucked that year...

Ainge played scared the entire season as evident by the LSU game... And to say Rick was given PT because of his last name is idiotic. Ainge literally threw the ball away anytime a defender looked at him. Ainge was broken that season and it took an OC change to give him any solid footing.

He held his own in the Atlanta the year before in the title game before the refs threw phantom calls against us.

Ainge and Clausen had zero consistency that year. I love how you bring up Ainge lighting it up vs UAB and trash Rick, yet don't mention Ainge's scaredfest vs LSU while trying to make Ainge look good.

The revisionist history on here never disappoints.

Casey Clausen is hands down one of the top 3 QB's to ever play at UT. 1 road loss in his entire career (Auburn) and a 34-10 record as a starter with a handful of missed games due to injury.

Had he not been so close to Manning years, he would have more hype....

Oh man I bet I know your friend. I remember something similar happening at Liquid (which was a club on the Strip). Casey and Brit Jackson were both there and Casey had a posse of dudes with him. This would've been late August 2003.

Omg...I remember that. One of my buddies from Morrill Hall was tied up in that. Said Casey was a total punk.

Actually, it was Rita. Katrina was in August and then Rita was in September. That was a great game in a horrible season. I was actually at this game and had people start throwing things at me when we won.

It was after Rita. I watched that game in Port Arthur, Texas in a contractors building because e didn’t have power in our hospital or my house. That dude had generators and satellite. I was the only Tennessee fan in there out of about 40 people and they were pissed.

Everything changes for Ainge mentally if he knows he is going out there for ever series of every game. We don't know how that would have turned out, but I believe we have a far improved record. I agree with Saban that R. Clausen simply wasn't a FBS caliber QB. Now, in retrospect the wildcard is that whole post shoulder injury pain med addiction Ainge revealed well after his career here ended. Maybe that played into the playing time split.

Everything isn’t that cut and dry. To me, stock earned the starting spot going into that season based on how he finished the 2004 season and bowl game. Especially with Schaeffer transferring. Ainge should have redshirted in 2005.

But to sit here and say that Ainge played scared because he knew he was gonna split time is pure nonsense. It was widely known Ainge was scared to take hits or get pressured well before the LSU game.

It isn’t that cut and dry that ainge should have been the starter. Not like he got a fair shake either.

If he’d have been better at home...or in the SEC championship game against LSU, I might agree. As it was, I think he was highly overrated.
