Davonte's skinny as yardstick, but I already love the potential in his game. Watching the 16 minute highlights, Ticket was involved in all sorts of plays, disruptive on D and even defending down low, all 178 pounds of him. Davonte is high energy, and his length is such an asset. My favorite play of his so far was when he used his long arms to battle and tap in a missed free throw at around 14:39 on the highlights.

Drew is crafty and long as well. He should have been credited with about 4 blocks, as he got a phantom foul on one and hurried another couple of shots with tenacity down low and later quickness defending the perimeter. He's going to be a handful on offense and defense as he gains experience. Incredible to think that he could've had 12 points in 8 minutes of action if he had knocked down all his free throws. Also I like the way he blocks shots -- like GW, he keeps the ball in play when advisable instead of slinging it into the stands. And he made a nifty outlet pass after a steal to Ticket for a slam.

Agreed. I have already said I think Gaines is the next Admiral type, who plays with high energy and emotion and will get better every season he's hitting the weights and conditioning. Don't know if he'll ever develop the overall size and mass like Admiral but his on the court play will be very similar I think.

Drew is fun to watch, he's going to be another coach on the court kind of like Grant. If he learns to play with his back to the basket some and takes advantage of his length and size down low he could be a real force. I think his missing FTs was just that energy dump freshmen have until they adjust to the nature of the game.

Gaines reminds me a bit of J.P. Prince with his emotional intensity and how hard he plays. He is under far more control than Prince was, though, Prince's emotions often got the better of him. Imagine a J.P. Prince always under control, focused, and not prone to making stupid mistakes, that is what I think Gaines will be to this team.

Absolutely! I went home for lunch today and had some leftover chicken spaghetti. It was really good - more updates including dinner and what I’ll bring watching tonight later. Stay tuned!

Was that the kind of update you wanted?
Depends. Is “leftover chicken spaghetti” a code word for something?

Hit his first 3 of 4 and then uncharacteristically missed a bevy there. He was amped, I think.

Maybe he was 4 of 5 or 5 of 6. I was thinking, man he's going to be 83% or 87% if he makes the one he was shooting and then he missed a bunch. But even his misses weren't bricks. He does put it up quick. One dribble and then shoots it.

I noticed he is not one to procrastinate. I think he will end up being much better, and is. Lots of friends and family being there may have spooked him a bit.

I haven't checked the film, but the more I think about it I think he was 3 for 3, then 4 for 5, missed #6. 4 for the first 5 and 2 for the 2nd 5. All in the double bonus iirc, so no pressure to hit the first to get the bonus.

I was more impressed that he was mixing it up quite a bit in the paint. Pretty tough kid that I thought was going to be a little soft.

yes, 4 of 5, I believe. Yes, he was definitely creating some havoc. His basketball IQ and "smarts" in general are what we need. Most intriguing to me is that as a freshman in HS, he was a 6-foot guard. Grew like a weed in 4 years, but has the full array of positional skills due to the way he grew along the way.

Good to see all the frosh getting in the fray early in their careers, and all look capable. I think there's a good chance that maybe 3-4 of them develop into players who can bring depth when we hit the SEC stretch. You can tell that Rick is emphasizing Defense first with them all...play D and get more P/T. Seems scoring will come along with this bunch.

I like them both for sure. Gaines is actually the only player I've ever really talked to. Me and him talked off/on on twitter before he came here. I really want to see him do well, he's a good kid.
