Without claiming to be much better than Coach at evaluating recruits, I do think passing on Angeli was an inexcusable error.

JG could have very well pulled us to the playoff with our schedule and stud RB.

It wasn’t in spite of Nico necessarily, but rather it doesn’t take much to turn around and hand the ball off.

Many of the guys he brought in didn’t hit. Also our most productive players during his tenure have been Pruitt recruits.

He recruited Nico and it’s safe to say he didn’t fit the system. He even hand picked a qb in Milton over hooker and still was wrong. That’s just not his strength. Sorry not sorry.

Lastly if you remember that was a huge knock on him at his previous stop. He balled out with Scott Frost’s recruits and struggled as they left.
A huge chunk of Pruitt recruits left and Pruitt was a long time ago. Heupel went to the playoffs with Heupel’s team.

We're sick of improving every year even though we just came out of a program defining scandal that could have led to a generations worth of basement dwelling. Furthermore, this crawling out of sheol that we've been in since about 06'-07' is hurting the trolls and negavols......we are a woke society now and need to be all inclusive to include the feelings and well-being of trolls and nega's.......we need to hope for a complete failure this year to allow for the peace of our opposite spectrum brothers and sisters.
lol blue font for sarcasm--- I dont see how anyone who read my thread sees it as ripping CJH----Im saying all this freaking out over JA isnt needed bc CJH is great at maximizing the talent of the team.

Wasn't directed at you specifically bro.....was just saying in general how people want to knit pick Heupel, which in reality I feel is doing a pretty amazing job considering this new wild wild west football.

that said, Everyone jacks up evaluations. I forget the stat, but the amount of 5 star busts by the experts is ridiculous. Some guys just can't translate from high school to college and college to pros. It's sort of a crap shoot at times. Recruiting 30+ guys every year your going to over estimate on a few.

Good grief. Given the 28 scholarship reductions over 5 years and Pruitt-era related sanctions, we're seeing that Heupel wants to build with recruits, not transfer grabs which he's had to do a lot of. There's just two Pruitt players left and I think this is the last year of reduced roster.

This is Elarbee's make/break year; the OL doesn't have to be playoff good, but "another season of development and we will be damned" good. Heupel has acknowledged and prioritized development, and Elarbee is very optimistic about their progress.

Given two decades of program blight, being relevant the last four have been a minor miracle. We'll see who Heupel is in these next two seasons.

Some difficult yet weird truths about CJH: His evaluation skills have been oddly bad. His biggest success stories? Jeremy Pruitt recruits. Hendon Hooker was Pruitt’s recruit—yet Heupel handed the job to Joe Milton, a QB he chose, over Hendon. We all saw how that turned out.

So I don’t understand the angst around Joey Aguilar.

Heupel may struggle at talent evaluation, but he’s elite at maximizing lesser talent. Last season, the truth was…..Nico was a liability. But Heupel schemed around him and still managed 10 wins. That’s what great coaches do.

Ok so we have Joey Aguilar—a seasoned QB who thrived at Appalachian State despite having:
  • a weaker O-line,
  • Inferior coaching, (is anyone really going to argue any of those app state coaches have the prowess and offensive genius of CJH?)
  • and worse overall talent around him.
And he still balled out. So why shouldn’t we believe Heupel can coach this guy to at least match, if not exceed, what Nico did?

JA could throw for 4,000+ yards in this system. He’s got a better offensive line this time, the defense is still solid, and the run game is always there under Heupel. WRs are a little shaky and unproven- I’ll give you that, but still better then anything he ever had at app state or ucla for that matter.

Is he Cam Newton? No. Is he some huge blue chip recruit? No. But I’m tired of that. The last guy we trusted screwed us- for the slow ones in the back I’m talkin about Nico. You got a guy that was casted to the side and is pissed off and ready to prove himself.

My point: let’s just see what happens.
Has he offered any QBs who went elsewhere and were successful? If so, then he doesn’t really struggle with talent evaluation, does he? I’m not sure that you have made your point.

I think we already know who huepal is: a beast. The way he coaches and schemes up his guys is amazing.

I’m saying to be EXCITED bc CJH will get JA right!

Yep, Fahr Heupel and get another coach so you can post your wisdom again in 4 years.
Geez, wait a waste of board space. Who you going to hire? Some of you had your d**ks in the dirt for so long that you don't know what improvement or success is. Go root for Vandy or Auburn.

He "hand picked" Milton over Hooker that season because Milton was better in the preseason practices. It wasn't some arbitrary decision based on a talent evaluation. When Milton went down with an injury, Hooker came on and improved every game. He firmly the job from there until his injury the next season. Do you evaluate coaches and/or athletes as a profession?

I’m not sure you can say “thrived”at App State.

You also mention how he now has better OL, team around him, etc, but you don't mention that he’s now going to be facing SEC defenses
