OP is correct. Teams win differently every single week. I only read the first page of this thread, so please forgive me if what am I about to say has already been mentioned it:

In 1998:
  • We had to kick a last second field goal to beat Syracuse.
  • We barely beat FL in OT.
  • We barely beat Auburn 17-9
  • We barely beat Arkansas and that was only because they fumbled with less than 2 minutes in the game.
  • We had to come from behind to beat Mississippi State in the SEC championship game.
  • We avoided facing Chris Weinke after he got injured, so we played FSU against their backup QB, who threw a pick six in the national title game.
All season long in 1998, I listened to fans complain about our "soft zone" defense. My point is sometimes you need a little luck.

Gambling Gators was playing with house money and had some pretty good luck. That said we won anyway. Glad to see their coach is bad at math. Maybe he thinks this is a throw away year or maybe he’s going to coach like this which will bite him down the road. Enjoy the win.

I will have to watch the game again, but I don't think we blitzed much on 3rd and long, and 3rd and long is where we really got hurt.

I am so glad we won, but imo Fla coach was playing to win, not just keep it close and I actually admire him for that. He gambled and it paid off. I do not understand the going for 2 on both occasions though.

Very well said. I had much rather trust our regular offensive scheme and risk an interception, than to put the game in the hands of our defense. I hope Hype learned from this for the future. If we were to get up on bama or ga. we better go wide open the whole game.

Having watched the entire '98 season recently, there are going to weeks that you just have to find a way to win. And some weeks, you need to hit the inside straight on the river.

I seriously have had zero negative thoughts today. I've seen that game go the other dang way far too many times.

I have no problem with running the clock and I can even see conservative running plays on first and maybe second down, again to run the clock. On third down or even 4th down when we needed 4 or 5 yards I think they should have trusted the offense who had been great all day and called a creative play to get the first down, which if they succeeded would have essentially been the end of the game. I guess that is my one significant issue with the offensive coaching, otherwise they did great. Anyway, great victory, GBO.

Yeah, so let me get this straight so that I can understand some of you NegaVols. We're 4-0, ranked #8, just beat a hated top 20 rival, and have a bye week, is this correct? I just gonna say that we really suck, especially on defense. The coaching staff is extremely incompetent for having us where we are now. Nobody is paying any attention to us with our transferred players saying we're bru-ing hookers over here, oh and we still suck ranked #8 at 4-0 after beating a hated top 20 rival. I'm not doing blue font because that's a Florida color. I hate the lady Vols too, btw, BVS all day baby!

I think this might indeed be the case…we just don’t have the players we need in the secondary. That said, our coaches still have to work with what they have. Ain’t calling for anybody’s job…I’d just like to know what the plan is and then see some improvement. Maybe starting with teaching our current DBs how to tackle?

Issue wasn’t playing zone, it was playing awful zone. Some windows were way to open. Also, yes you can change game plans. It’s called adjustments. But at the end of the day we won and that’s all I give a damn about.

AR only threw 2 TDs against us, he ran for the other 2. It was more a fluke he hadn’t thrown any this year than anything. He’s a good QB that played really well last year. He just had a slow start this year.

I think alot are forgetting. Normal teams would have punted on all them 4th downs and the stats would be completely different. They made this game close because of Defense of course but mostly so aggressive on 4th down and not punting.

Completely agree! We had guys in zones standing 5 yards from a wide open guy. SURELY, it’s coached to adjust your zone when somebody is that close to you. That part was very frustrating

I don't blame Napier for going for 2 both times. We couldn't stop them so he's thinking "go for it....they can't stop us." If we were better on D he doesn't go for 2. Fortunately we stopped them on those plays.

Before this game started, the consensus was to beat Florida we had to stop AR from running wild. A defensive game plan for that goes against the idea of man coverage and mega blitzing. We followed the game plan and although AR passed better than he has all season we still won. I’ve watched a decent amount of Florida’s first 3 games and AR made throws against us that he wasn’t making before. Tip your hat to him and move on to lsu with the W!

I just said this in another post but I hate hearing Richardson had the game of his life because no quarterback would be starting at Florida that couldnt hit a wide open receiver with all day to pass the ball, we made him look good because our defense was so bad, I understand the game plan but clearly it wasnt working so you adjust, it was a sold plan until it didnt work then you have to improvise and we didnt, Im not unhappy I just hope we learn from this game moving forward.

If you went back and reviewed his prior games this season I think you might change your mind. AR was in a bad slump throwing the ball missing wide open receivers, throws he made last year. JMO
