Bored at work on a Friday and wanted to see what Volnation thinks.

Bama runs the table and wins the west.

Tenn goes 10-2 with losses to Bama and TA&M, wins east.

Tenn then beats Bama in the SEC Championship.

Do we go to the playoff, does Bama, or both?

I'm assuming a lot would depend on what other power 5 teams records are at that point. Happy Friday boys and girls :beerf:

Vols beat Bama in the SEC Championship...you are IN! There is no way they put in 2 SEC teams unless both teams were undefeated entering the Championship Game. I for one would like to see the playoffs expanded to 6 teams. That would include the 5 power conference champions and 1 at large so no one is left out. Just makes since!

Please tell me how a 6 team playoff would work.

It would just depend on the other Power 5 Conferences, as well as if there is a team like Boise St or Houston outside of the Power 5 that has gone undefeated. If the Big 10, Big 12, ACC, and Pac12 all had a 0 or 1 loss champion, or if Houston runs the table that includes a win over Oklahoma, the SEC could very well get left out of the playoffs.

Well you could give the 1 & 2 teams a bye, but I get your point. I think at some point an 8 team playoff will be a reality.

To the OP point, depending on what the other conferences do, you scenario cold result in no SEC team being in the playoff. Notre Dame is the wild card in all of this, they have been left out too long (in their eyes), look for them in the playoff this year.

Makes no sense, just make it 8. Why have one team play twice?

Oh, I'm good with 8.
I just remember how long it took to get a playoff.
You have to take baby steps with the NCAA. Sudden movements and loud noises send them back into hiding.

I haven't a clue but I'm sure they could make it work. JMO...drop a few of the meaningless bowls....play 6 vs 1, 5 vs 2 and 4 vs 3. Highest seed remaining gets the bye to the championship game! Same seeding that they use now, SOS, wins, ect...that way the seeding is still meaningful. Heck I don't know, but I think it would just be better to include all 5 power conferences and 1 other non power school.

Not true, then the 7th team would be left out, just like the 9th if you pull an 8 team playoff. Someone is always left out my friend.

You could argue that a 10-2 team shouldn't be a playoff team. But SOS likely gets the SEC champ into the playoffs. The solution: don't lose to aTm. Then both UT and Bama would be 12-1, and it's unlikely there would be four teams with a better record against tougher opponents than UT.

True someone is always left out...lifes not fair..but if they don't want to be left out, join a Power 5 conference and win!

That's mostly legitimate but really.
We have the power five. Pick whatever number equal to or above those 5.
Each conference should be represented by their champion.

A 6 team playoff would mean 3 games, 3 winners, and the wonderful committee that had nothing to do since it went to 6 would get to pick the BIGGEST LOSER to fill the 4 team bracket.

It is also known as the Royal Wesson Oil Party.

I'm not sure either get to go, TopNotch, and here's why.

1. Either Ohio State, Michigan, or Michigan State will end the season with 0 or 1 loss, because the rest of that conference is rollable. Maybe two of them could end up with 0 or 1 loss. So that's a guaranteed B10 spot in the playoffs, with a second team maybe knocking on the door.

2. Same kind of thing with the ACC: Clemson and FSU sit well higher than the rest, making it fairly easy for one of them to get to the end of the season at 12-1 or 13-0. So there's a second spot filled.

3. B12 would normally be a fairly tough fight at the top, with Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, and TCU (and sometimes even Texas Tech) beating each other up. But Texas is down, TTech is down, and now Baylor has fallen apart at the seams. Even Okla St is weaker the past two years. Which means one of Oklahoma or TCU will likely end the season undefeated or with a single loss. Third spot filled.

So now the Vols and Bama are competing with a PAC winner and the #2 team in the B10 for that final spot. Some ESPN gurus are saying there's a good chance that no PAC team ends the year with less than 2 losses. So maybe we can ignore them for a minute.

Here's the rub: that second B10 team (Michigan or Ohio State, likely) will be lobbying hard for the 4th spot. And those teams have powerful friends in the corridors of power of the CFP. They wouldn't be able to argue their way past a defending champion 1-loss Alabama, but probably would have the oompf to argue for a spot over a 2-loss Tennessee. Even an SEC champ 2-loss Tennessee.

It would be a real conundrum for the panel, absolutely. Can't pick Bama, because Tennessee beat them for the SEC crown. Can't pick Tennessee, because a 1-loss Michigan or Ohio State has more friends in court. Can't pick a 1-loss Mich/OSU, because a 1-loss Bama who are the defending national champs trump them.

At that point, I'm sure the selection committee would be praying that one of the PAC schools finds a way to win the conference with just a single loss, to avoid all of that.

Bottom line for me is, I can't see any 2-loss team, even a conference champ, getting into the playoffs as long as there are 4 or more conference champs and strong runner ups from other conferences with 0 or 1 loss.

3v6, winner plays 2.
4v5, winner plays 1.

If we win SECCG, the only thing keeping us out is undefeated/1 loss teams in Big (Mich, Mich St, Iowa or OhST), ACC (Clemson and FSU), Big12 (OK, TCU, Bay), and Pac12 (Stanford, uscW, UCLA, Oreg) and notre dousch.

Also an 11 win non-SECwest team could spoil the party such as LSU, Ole Miss and bamer.

I seriously don't see more than 5 undefeated or 1 loss teams and our strength of schedule will hang with any other team out there even though it isn't as tough as years past.
