Scout.com: Can UT class provide immediate help?

Pay content so I'll synopsize. Hyams says there are only two incidences of a signing class helping win a National C-ship in their first year, 1980 UGA class only because of Hershel Walker and the 2006 Florida class due mainly to Harvin and Tebow. He points out that Fulmer has had two #1 classes, 1994 when the Vols went 8-4 and 2005 when UT went 5-6. Guys that Jimmy thinks could help right away are, in no particular order:
Eric Berry
DeAngelo Willingham
Nevin McKenzie
Brent Vinson
Ahmad Paige
Gerald Williams
Kenny O'Neal
Lennon Creer
Kevin Cooper at FB
Donald Langley
Ben Martin
Rolando Melancon
William Brimfield
Chris Donald

Jimmy goes on to state something that I agree with 100%, which is given the recruiting classes that other SEC schools are bringing in, the 2007 UT class will keep UT on par with most conference foes talentwise but it will not allow UT to "out-talent" its way to an SEC C-ship. Hyams goes on to say that UT will have to have good coaching and a few breaks to win the SEC at this point.

i agree as well...but the same is also tru of our competiton.......there is/will not be any great disparity in talent over the next couple of years.

it will be equally as tough on us, as it will be on our competition.....LSU, GA, FL, AUB, SC and even Bama and TN will all have similar talent levels.

and yet again, each year only one of us can win the SEC. So there will be 6 teams each year that will be left scratching their heads about how bad thier coaching is.

Which kind of begs the question, how many years of head scratching is it going to take? Personally, I think a lot of people must be bald after 8 years of it.

I would say even with this class, we will still not have quite the talent of Florida or LSU because of last years class.

true.
FLorida and Alabama have made coaching changes in the past eight years, and both only have what 1 SEC title a peice.

LSU has two, GA has two, and LSU has made a coaching change since their last one, not of their doing obviously.

Auburn has one, no coaching changes.

SC has 0 sec titles and has made a coaching change, again not of their doing.

TN has 0 SEC titles and no coaching changes.

now what to take from all that, you can decide....

but no one, regardless of coaching changes or not, has dominated the league. Aub, UGA, Bama, LSU and FL have all won the conf. since we last won it.

i think that just kind of goes to show a)we haven't been as good as the others over the same time span and b)it's just as hard for anyone else to consistently win it as it is for us. TN, FL and GA have all played for SEC titles over the same time span, and Bama, Aub, LSU and ARK have all played for SEC titles since then. 7 teams....throw S.C. in there in what appears to be their best opporutnity and now you got 8 with a realistic shot at it.

it ain't getting any easier.

08/09 imo are still our best shot at it. things would have to really develop and we'd need a few breaks along the way for us to win it next season.

We still don't know if Crompton can be the guy in 08 though. That will be his first year starting so it could be great or he could have some growing pains.

true. right now i'll believe the hype....and think he'll be OK...everything says he'll be fine. and if not, Stephens or Coleman are there waiting in the wings....

Florida proved last year the the QB doesn't necessarily have to be the sole or primary reason you win a championship....

Exactly. Just as Tennessee proved the same in 1998 with Tee Martin and the national championship.

I haven't thought about the entire schedule and the schedules' of the Vols' oppoenents over the next 2-3 years but I do think that with the Gators' losses on defense, 2007 is probably the best chance UT will have to beat UF over the next 3-4 seasons. Considering how much of an 8-ball a UF loss puts the Vols behind, I'm guessing that if Phil cannot win it in 2007, he will not have an SEC C-ship this decade. Assuming that Fulmer coaches through 2010, that would be 12 years without an SEC. From what I can tell, Phil is currently tied with Majors for the longest stretch under one UT head coach without a conference championship during the SEC era (since 1933). If UT does not win the SEC in 2007 Phil will be #1 on the list all by his lonesome. Here's your Top 5:

1. 8 year drought *tie Fulmer (1999-????) and Majors (1977-1984)
3. 7 year drought Bill Battle (1970-1976)
4. 6 year drought Bowden Wyatt (1957-1962)
5. 4 year drought Neyland (1947-1950) *the Vols did not play in 1943 but John Barnhill did not win the SEC in 1941-42 or 1944-45.

I feel like we have a reasonable shot every year. Some years we feel its better than others but have disasterous results (2002 and 2005), some years we don't expect to contend but we do (1998 and 2004).

I think our shot is just as good next year as its going to be for a while. It all goes down in the swamp this September.

Florida has had the no.1 recruiting class in the nation 2 years in year. Plus all of his offensive plays the QB has the option to either run or pass depending on what formation the defense is (if they are playing run or pass). Thats very hard to stop when he gets a QB who can run and pass effectively. Fulmer has his hands full.

The team on the move is Spurrier. I think SC was 5th in recruiting. That should make Fulmer sweat a few more pounds off.
