Hurricane Irma

I can't imagine the cost of hotel rooms. They would have already been high for the game this weekend not to add on raising prices on evacuees.

I can't imagine everyone has the money to leave home like that for days, travel and have to pay hotel, food, etc. it's gotta be hard on a lot of people.

Hopefully, people on the west side remember what Charley did and have prepared accordingly. We have a family member who decided to shelter in place in Naples. He is a hardcore outdoorsman and will probably only have trouble if he happens to be in a building that collapses. Even so, we are worried for him. I'm really hoping nobody stayed on Sanibel or Captiva.

Winds have dropped and storm has weakened due to Cubas terrain, but they expect it to regain strength before making landfall in Florida

Some friends of ours from church were supposed to be leaving today to go there. I've never been, but they say it's beautiful.

I know some of you folks are under threat of a hurricane and all, but I laughed.

It is pretty much like the whole west coast. It is a very charming community. My heart is hurting for my beloved West coast. I'm afraid this storm is going to destroy so much of it. Little towns like Safety Harbor, Dunedin and Tarpon Springs, and all those mobile home communities (some of our closest friends are retired folks that sold their b&m homes during the boom a few years ago and bought trailers), and I've got so many loved ones down there, my nerves are shot now. 😣

Im wondering the same thing -- does insurance pay it ? Are all employers that nice down there ? They certainly arent up here when there are blizzards --many expect you to drive to work in it

I imagine it's gonna be horrible. We're supposed to go to honeymoon island next month when we go to crystal river. Praying for your friends man.

It does make you wonder how it all works for these poor people.

That's the part a lot of people don't consider. I have very little concern for me, I'm in good shape mentally, physically and financially. Not everyone is and a cat 1 can be deadly to some.

All kinds of people need help, but there are a lot of retirees down here on a fixed income, no family and no clue what to do, before, during or after.

Insurance would pay for "extra expense" incurred after the storm.

What is the status of flood insurance in FLA these days? IIRC there was a time when you pretty much had to be a cash buyer to purchase near the water because nobody would write a policy and no bank would lend without it. I also remember a lot of people fighting tooth and nail with homeowners' carriers to get damage classified as wind/storm driven and not flooding so they could get something. I've heard a few people being interviewed state that they have flood insurance so I am guessing something has changed.

Not looking good for Sanibel right now. Whole island supposed to be covered in water pretty much.

Yeah it really looks like Sanibel is going to get smacked in the mouth by wind and surge. Winds likely over 130 and surge possibly over 9 ft. Charlie really hit them too but depending on how she strengthens over the next 24 hours, this could be considerably worse.

It's amazing how quickly Irma shored up her core and got healthy after clearing that last mountain range in the middle of Cuba. She really looks ready to reintensify.

Charlie went slightly north and was a much smaller storm so they got hit, but could have been worse.

This could be considerably worse. If the surge is as predicted, 95% of the island will be legitimately under feet of water

It's mandatory if you purchase property in a flood zone. They designate flood zones pretty damn liberally so a lot of folks have to get it. I just bought a house a few months ago and I was just barely inside a flood zone, seriously by a few yards. So I had to get it. Neighbors say this neighborhood has never flooded as long as they've been here. We'll see.

My girlfriend and I vacationing in Nashville, not the original plan, and we are staying at the Gaylord Opryland hotel. Late last night, around 1:00 am, 4 huge charter buses pulled. I spoke with one of the riders. They were all evacuaees from Florida.

We find the opposite here in Houston. Flood zones flood all the time and non-100 year zones still flood every few years.

We'll see how it goes but could be rough for sure. We love taking the kids there - hope it doesn't get re-shaped too much. Went there for the first time in 1993 - feel like it hasn't changed all that much since then other than the Charlie damage.
