Hurd vs T. Henry

Henry was a beast , Hurd is Tall.

Henry looked like a bowling ball hitting the line, and the result was often similar. Hurd's height makes it hard to do that, but the sheer size of the man should mean he can run over some fools if he gets a good straight run going.

You Don't think he is a Beast and will be a better pro? Hurd has always shown talent and discipline and aggressiveness made its a little more deceptive cause he is tall but Hurd is more discipline about the game and gives more effort on and off the field.
how can you compare Henry's effort Vs Hurd's ?

I think Webb was the best RB I've seen play at Tennessee since I started following the Vols in the mid '70s. Johnnie Jones was great, so was Stanley Morgan and Reggie Cobb and Jamal Lewis, etc, etc. IMHO it's Webb number one and then the debate to fill out the rest of the list can begin.

I'm in the vast minority I know, but I think Charlie Garner is the best back we've ever had.

He basically replicated Webb's best season on 60 less carries.

I doubt we'll ever see another UT back average over 7ypc in a 1,000 yard season

I think a lot of this best ever rhetoric for Hurd is from younger fans who never saw Webb play. I don't want to be the older guy getting ill about the good ole days. But the numbers I posted earlier are undeniable. Almost 1,500 yards in 6 starts. Amazing. If he had been the featured back that year and also played 13 games as most teams do now, we are talking about a 2,000 yard season perhaps.

Again, love Hurd. Really think he is a gamer and tough as hell. Not the best or really even close yet. He can change my mind and I believe he could. This year is big for him. I actually kinda disagree with you KB which I don't normally do. But I wouldn't trade Hurd for anyone. Including Fournette. I think Hurd has it in him to rip off a crazy season. He has incredible work ethic and talent. Needs to break those long ones though. I want to see that. Every time Webb touched the ball there was a chance he housed it. Just the truth.

Wouldn't necessarily trade Hurd after the fact, now that he's a Vol....I love the kid, how hard he works and how hard he runs. He obviously does some very good things for the team.

But in hindsight, knowing what we know now about Hurd vs Fournette or Chubb or Dalvin Cook....yeah, if we could go back to when they were committing, I'd take those 3 for sure over Hurd. And that's not disparaging Jalen, cause I think he's a top 6 or 7 back in the country, which is outstanding. But those guys are just better and I believe would make our offense better were they playing for us now.

Same deal with say Dobbs and Watson.....love Dobbs, but we'd be a better offense with Watson than with Dobbs...and there wouldn't be 500 threads about Watson's accuracy problems.

Charlie Garner. Man that dude was fun to watch. He doesn't get mentioned enough maybe cause he had to split carries with Stewart/Hayden but he won quite a few games for us not to mention had a really good pro career.

Like to see more "bulldog" in Hurd? That is an absurd statement. He's been a bulldog since his first carry. He had no blocking his freshman year--got a ton of yards on his own after being hit. The guy is as tough as they come. He's a different runner than Henry--taller--and running in a different offense. They are both studs.

Let's hope Hurd proves smarter than Henry when it comes to his private life. Henry made a major mess of that.

Big Cheese is definitely my favorite vol of all time. I think he is a better pure running back compared to Hurd. Hurd is a better all around back imo. Stats are often misleading. Was Barry Sanders better than Emmitt Smith? Yes, but Smith has the title for most rushing yards; however, if Sanders didn't retire when he did then he'd have the rushing title.

John Gruden would certainly agree..

I think Ty chandler will replicate that in a couple years.

For those that haven't seen Webb Google Chuck Webb Cotton Bowl and watch the video. As you do realize that in just one game you see everything you want from a guy running the football. Also realize this was vs a 1 loss swc champion bowl team.

Travis Henry played behind the best run-blocking offensive line in UT history. Hurd played behind garbage his freshman year. Last year the o-line was much improved, but still not close to the force that was the '97 - '00 line. If Hurd played behind Henry's o-line, his ypc would be at least a yard higher. He's just as good at breaking tackles as any back in UT history. Problem is, his freshman year, he was usually fighting off two guys behind the LOS on every run attempt. As far as who was/is the better back? Tough call. They are both great.

Once again O line has nothing to do with who is a better runner. Anyone except Tauren Poole can run through a gaping hole, its what they do after contact and how they avoid contact. I can see by watching Henry, Hardesty, Lewis, Garner, Stephens that they are better running backs than Hurd. Hurd might be a more complete back, but when it comes down to making guys miss, running through tackles, and running away from people, Hurd is behind all of these backs.

For the best RB, I measure it by the number of +200 games against tough competition.

Thus, #1 is Chuck Webb, followed by Tony Thompson, and Johnny Jones.

1 Chuck Webb 294 1989 Mississippi
2 Chuck Webb 250 1989 Arkansas[6]
3 Tony Thompson 248 1990 Mississippi State
4 Johnnie Jones 248 1983 Vanderbilt
5 Tony Thompson 236 1990 Vanderbilt
6 Johnnie Jones 234 1983 Rutgers
7 Jamal Lewis 232 1997 Georgia
8 Travis Stephens 226 2001 Florida
9 Reggie Cobb 225 1989 Auburn
10 Arian Foster 223 2005 Vanderbilt

He was phenomenal as well, definitely top 5, case could be made he was the best, incredible feet overall quickness, he could do it all.

Also, people, including me, usually forget James "Little Man" Stewart....he was outstanding, one of our all-time bests IMO.

Henry had an O Line. Hurd had well Hurd! I don't know how many runs I saw in the last 2 years where Hurd was hit behind the line and still got positive yardage.

Two different running styles. Henry was a bulldozer. Unstoppable in college

John Kelly reminds me of you. Do you think that's a reasonable comparison? I like his pad level and think he will be a really good one. I feel like his he's going to pay his dues and then go off like you. Just my perspective.

all of those running backs where good and I loved them. But you cant compare Hurd to them, they where in a different offense with good offensive lines and good passing games. Hurd started as a freshman and it was pretty much just Hurd. He has pounded that rock for us like no other and fought for every yard and he gets back up and does it again and again and again.

If he breaks the record this year he will have earned every single yard and he will be the BEST running back in UT history.

end of story.

Disagree. You don't "earn" the BEST label by having it rougher than other candidates. This is just a fan debate anyway...absolutely no science to it. I have Chuck Webb #1, Charlie Garner #2 and Jamal Lewis barely edging Hurd for # 3 presently. Hurd has a whole season to shake up that OPINION.

I want to give a shout out to William Howard, Greg Amsler, Roland Poles, Mose Phillips, Chester Ford, Shawn Bryson and Will Bartholomew for their effort in helping making all of these backs great.

William Howard had a stout season toting the rock himself in 86 I believe. Keith Davis went down and they went heavy. Think he had 14 straight carries against Ole Miss and they couldn't stop him.

Yep. 14 straight carries just to run out the clock
