Hurd vs T. Henry

I can't say one way or the other as I didn't start following college football seriously until 2006. I've seen a good amount of Highlights on Henry, and of course he seemed to be a really powerful runner. Hurd seems to be much more all around athletic, though.

Henry was a stronger runner, more difficult to tackle. Hurd has great hands out of the backfield and is excellent in pass pro. I'd give Jalen the nod for sure as a receiver, honestly not sure who's the better blocker in pass pro cause I don't recall ever watching Henry like I have Hurd in that regard. But as far as who was the better runner? Henry without a doubt IMO.

I think Hurd has plenty of bulldog in him. He never shys away from contact and he exudes confidence. Not sure where he is coming from on his opinion. Personally I'd rather have Hurd. He will end up having the better college and pro career.

I think the all time UT rushing list would look a lot different if Lewis and Webb hadn't got hurt. I loved Henry, but those two were incredible.

Some have a problem wrapping their brain around the idea that Jalen Hurd has a chance to be the all time leading rusher in Tennessee history his Junior year, think about that when you want to compare former Vol RB's

Hurd doesn't shy away from contact but he doesn't handle the contact like Henry did. Henry would explode through contact and keep going. Hurd is slowed down or falls over much easier. Hurd loses so much momentum when contact is made.

This is true, but Jalen came into a unique situation. Most RBs didn't arrive at UT and play for a talentless team. Jalen got to UT as a freshman and was given the ball as many times as he could handle. Jalen is a remarkable back, but it's tough to compare when the circumstances were so different.

That doesn't mean as much as you think.

Some have a problem looking at the fact that he's had way more carries to this point and his yards per carry are less than the true greats that played here...

Hurd is good, but he's not in the same class as the handful of aforementioned...

Henry had a stiff arm that would send tacklers to hell. I swear he threw a vandy defender 20yds one time. We haven't had a RB that could burst threw the LOS like Henry could. He was a rock.

I agree, Very different. I don't think Henry played until his sophomore season, I could be wrong, and split carries with 2 other backs that could've started anywhere in the SEC.

Webb was the featured back for part of one season. He would have blown away any of the other numbers on this list. He had 554 yards rushing in 2 games his redshirt freshman year. That's crazy. He would have been mentioned with Walker and Jackson in my opinion had he stayed healthy.

If Hurd had a season to develop and then step on the field with an experienced OLine, proven WRs, and QBs his stats would be outrageous. I'll agree that Lewis, Henry, and a few others might be better pure runners. But as far as overall running back I think you have to put Hurd up there with anyone after 2 seasons in a rebuilding program.

I'm looking ability and how talented each of these guys are/were.

Hurd being our leading rusher is gonna be a function of longevity/being the man for 3 seasons, unlike the others. It'll be a function of him having many more carries than the other guys, not because he's been a better runner IMO. He's already within 90 or so carries of Henry after only two seasons.

Webb, Henry, Lewis, Garner, Stephens, even Graham were all more explosive runners capable of bigger, more consistent splash plays/runs than Hurd. If Jalen somehow finds that extra gear and ability to rip off big runs this year, something he hasn't done to date, then we can have a different discussion.

My thoughts exactly. No knock on Hurd at all. He's the best back we have had in a good while. But the guys you listed are hard to top.

How nice for us we got to have them both :)

Webb had 1,236 yards with 5 regular season starts in 1989. If you count the bowl game which they didn't back then, he had 1,486 yards in 6 starts. Incredible. He did play in the other games, but as the featured back he was unlike any UT runner I've seen since. I remember listening to the game he got hurt in. I was heartbroken.

Would love to see Hurd in our offenses of old behind a better O-line. He still doesn't have the top end speed to get 50-60 yd breakaway TD runs but would still have better stats to date, IMHO

I think Webb was the best RB I've seen play at Tennessee since I started following the Vols in the mid '70s. Johnnie Jones was great, so was Stanley Morgan and Reggie Cobb and Jamal Lewis, etc, etc. IMHO it's Webb number one and then the debate to fill out the rest of the list can begin.

Agree. A sad day indeed. Regardless of his limited time, I've seen no one who had his total package of vision, cutting ability, burst, breakaway speed and toughness...
