It fits the narrative of what Deepark offered here a week or so ago and also Sankey nixing a Freeze to Alabama as OC a couple of years ago. Hey if he comes here great , he’s better than Pruitt but it’s going to hurt us long term. There are candidates out there like Napier who have more upside than Freeze.
I like Napier a lot, but I 3 years at Lafayette isn’t enough to call him more upside than Freeze.

Sure you have sat with SEC coaches. Blah, blah, blah. Liberty hired Freeze. A Christian university. And he has produced their best football ever. Also, zero sanctions by the NCAA. Look at the way Liberty players played. They were giving maximum effort. A trait indicative of a good head coach. No Inwouldnr have hired Sumlin. Freeze has won everywhere he has been. Sumlin won with Manziel. That’s it.

Posters like you seem to be part of an old guard that holds on to some fallacious thinking that a programs reputation should come first. Dumb. We aren’t a clean run program. We will never be. Might as well win. And if we hired Freeze and the NCAA came sniffing around? So what? If they don’t find anything then what’s the problem?

I am not disputing the fact that Hugh is a good coach or a better coach than what we have now. No one is disputing that.

I am saying, I believe he will be a shell of his old self in the SEC because he will not be able to get 5 star and highly ranked 4 stars because of his baggage.

I could be wrong, I freely admit that. But you guys should be able to admit he could be a mediocre coach here as well. Especially considering he never won a division title, SEC title, or natty even when he had the best players Ole Miss ever had.

Napier is the best choice out there that may be available now. He has been a HC in a program before which most believe is a priority over someone who just has coordinator experience.

But neither are as good. The whole baggage thing is overblown. Freeze isn’t the same guy he was.

Not sure why some folks keep wanting to spew “baggage?”

Tennessee has had 6 losing season over the past 10......and these people are worried about baggage......seriously?

I think most likely......that’s all they got. They either don’t want Freeze for whatever reason or they want to keep Pruitt.

I get it. Heck 10 years ago I wouldn’t have wanted any unnecessary baggage........however we have all been through years and years of losses, blowouts, and losing seasons.........”baggage” is about the last thing I’m worried about right now.

Tennessee needs a coach who can win, who can win now, who can beat good teams, and who knows offense, and who has “proven” they can do these things........Freeze checks off ALL of those.

Or....they don't think UT is firing Pruitt right now, and they don't think UT would hire Freeze because of baggage. For most, it's not a matter of what fans want, it's a matter of what the university will or won't do.

Ahem -Napier Look at his Wikipedia entry. He’s the guy. (If we fire Pruitt).

Really? So Napier barely beat Georgia State. Matter of fact it took him until OT. Where his team could only manage 34 points. Now Coast Carolina curb stomped GS. And Liberty beat CC. While he did beat Iowa State, that’s his best win in 3 years. Napier is 1-2 against App State.

But yeah he is the guy 🙄🙄

All maybe true; however my post was about “baggage.”

I feel it’s “silly” to keep on with the “baggage” stuff after Tennessee has went through the seven layers of candy cane hell for more than a decade.

I agree that we need a guy with HC experience. Not calling Napier a better coach or option than Freeze yet. I would put Napier right there with Herman... still be a fantastic hire but he’s turned down several sec opportunities so who knows where he actually wants to be. I think people just assume Tennessee because he’s from here just like they assume the worst with Freeze if he actually was hired.

Maybe so, but the donors responsible for the overwhelming majority of the coach's salary get to decide how silly it is.

Great post. Some want to bring up the vacated wins. Lol. Those games were played. Freeze also beat Saban when his defenses were among the best in the country.

Also it needs to be mentioned that from 2012-2016 Hugh Freezes offense ranked 5,5,7,1,3. That’s an average ranking of 4th in the SEC. Freeze is a proven winner who knows how to develop and utilize QBs and knows offense. Those who don’t want him are foolish.

Agreed. Our football program has more “baggage” at the moment (and in the past 12 years) than Freeze does!

Greg Schiano called...... he's wondering where he can leave his baggage in Knoxville. What? He can't? Really? Greg's unavailable for comment, currently, as he's on a call with Hugh screaming "Don't even think about it."

1. We need someone that wants to be here
2. Need a proven HC
3. Our offense sucks
4. Our defense sucks
5. We can't compete with anyone much less the big boys. FL, AL,GA
6. We have spent more than a decade in the basement
Answer... Hugh Freeze, do you think that all his baggage matters? Who cares, you learn from mistakes, bet he has too. #makeTNgreat again

I would certainly take him if it meant Pruitt were fired.

However it certainly would be more of a gamble.......in the actual head coaching department than Freeze.

Right now I would love to see ANY “good choice”.......Napier would certainly be one of them.

I like Freeze more, because he has been in the SEC as a HC before. He has improved down programs before, he has done it from the get go, and he has proven he can beat really good teams........and seriously after the past 10-15 years I don’t care about the baggage.

If it were Briles kind of baggage.......then maybe.......but it’s really no more than many other coaches, and some of what Tennessee and plenty of other SEC schools have had before.

He has HC experience
He knows offense
He wins
He has a good background

I’m down.......but would much rather have Freeze.

Well yea........and none of us know what they think.

I still think “baggage” doesn’t mean as much right now at Tennessee as it “would” have 10 years ago or so.
